Witch's Tale is a very easy and a bit repetitive, but the design style and overall game world make for a good game.

User Rating: 7.5 | A Witch's Tale DS
Witch's Tale falls into the category of "solid" JRPGs on the DS. There are tons of them, no doubt. However, Witch's Tale does manage to rise a bit above some of the others by providing some very good variety, and just an overall sense of style (think Harvest Moon meets Tim Burton).

The basics:
* Turn-based combat with your party of the protagonist (female magic user) and up to two other members.
* Level-ups automatically increase your stats
* Very basic combat system allowing you to pick a basic physical task, use an item, or cast a spell.
* You're wandering about various themed worlds, fighting bad guys and leveling up (no grinding needed) via random battle encounters, solving a few puzzles, and meeting NPCs as you go through the story.

The good:
* Fun, creative, and unique game world. The game borrows heavily from Alice in Wonderland, then throws in heavy doses of other fantasy stories and ideas.
* Great looking visuals, again with a very distinctive and well done art style.
* Very good audio, with catchy music throughout that fits the theme.
* A lot of variety in monsters
* Overall, just a high level of production and polish

The bad:
* Very, very easy. While this is not always a problem in games, in this game you'll fight many long, random battles where you know you're going to win, but it takes 3 minutes of repetitive tapping through the combat menus to get through it. Some of the monsters have high hit points, but give out minimal damage -- that gives you long, mindless battles.
* Only one physical attack, and no strategy about it. Party characters that can only do physical damage are really, really dull to play with since there's just a "hit" attack...
* More mazes than I'd prefer -- they seem to be there to lengthen the game somewhat artificially.

Again, as a whole, it's a well done game, but the combo of some annoying mazes with annoyingly easy combat makes for an overall tedious game. Probably worth a rental.
