It's rare that I disagree with a review from gamespot, today marks the 3rd time I do. This game is heart racing fun!
I strongly suggest turning off all the assists you can in the options to keep the thrill of the game intact while making it feel more familiar to the other Ace Combats we all know and love. With then on, I did feel like the game was doing nearly everything for me. With it off however, it's an absolute blast! The switching between chopper gunner, apache pilot, jet fighting, and C-130 scenes is a wonderful change of pace that make the game feel much less repetitive and exciting. It has been years since a game has made me audibly say "OH S**T" out of excitement rather than anger multiple times!
Gone are the cheesy Japanese saturated stories and annoying winey wingmen, these people feel a lot more like they should. There is still the occasional slice of cheddar that slips in... But not enough for you to want to shoot down your own wingman because he's such a whiney b****.
Overall I found this game a wonderful chest pounding experience and nice change for the serious. What they barrowed from other games are blatantly obvious, but they keep it fun the whole way through! My only real gripe is although it's pretty; I still think it could have looked better.
EDIT- Now that I have had a few more days to play it... I have mixed feelings. It is still fun... but the basic NEED to go into dogfight mode later in the game does make it rather stale. Not to mention that if you don't, every level just takes so much longer. I am talking hours longer. The area in which you can fight is also severely limited compared to the previous Ace Combat. I found the online Death Match mode in multiplayer a lot of fun... for about 10 minutes... then it became boring due to repetition. It's a decent game, but at this point I am beginning to think it would be a better rental. Additionally turning off ALL the assists you can helps... but you still don't have full control of the jet.... Like WHY CANT I ROLL! The inability to do this has put me in a bad spot multiple times.
Here's hoping it picks back up later on in the game.
