Not the greatest flight-sim game in the world, but still high on the list.

User Rating: 8.3 | Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War PS2
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is about two mercenaries who find themselves in the middle of a huge war between neighboring countries. The control style has two different settings: Standard and Novice. Standard mode is very difficult, as moving the analog stick does not control direction, but the rolling. With it, you only roll, which makes controlling your plane a pain in the butt. I prefer Novice mode, where the stick will move your plane up, down, left, or right. It makes the game much less frustrating.

The music for the game is spectacular. It is always nice and epic, giving you a feeling of heroism and victory that can be matched by few other games.

There are always two characters on your team: One of them, Pixy, is your wingman and helper throughout most of the game. You can command him to cover you from enemy fire, freely battle any target, battle a specific target, or form up with you. The second member, you, is a mysterious mercenary who quickly earns fame among ace fighters of all countries.

A negative of the game is your character never, EVER speaks. Everybody calls you Cypher, or Demon Lord once you reach a certain point in the game. You do not get to choose your own name. These things makes the immersive level severely low in my opinion, but it depends on who you ask, I guess. In the game, you can choose your own planes, buy new planes, and you even get special weapons that do a variety of things.

The difficulty is not hard. The hardest areas are when you are challenged by an enemy ace, or when you are timed. There are levels of difficulty, so if it feels too easy, then knock it up a notch! I think a harder difficulty is unlocked after you beat the game.

The ending leaves you fairly satisfied, though it feels like a bit of a cliffhanger. There are many things you can do after beating the game, such as special missions.

You are ranked after each mission depending on how you dealt with your foes. If you mercilessly destroy unarmed civilians, or injured soldiers, you'll be given a mercenary rank. If you destroy as many targets as possible, along with non-targets that are optional to destroy, you will be given a soldier rank. If you follow orders well and spare the lives of innocents and injured soldiers, you will be given the knight rank. The game changes slightly by what ranks you are given, but no rank is better or worse than the others. Play the way that fits your personality.

There are many levels in the game. Most are the same, but a few change depending on your current rank.

The graphics of the game are fair. They do have explosions, and almost-but-not-quite realistic scenery.

In the end, Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War is a great game that shouldn't be missed by anybody. It is more than worth the money and will leave you begging for more.
