Advance Wars 2 has definitely hooked me. When I got my GBA SP about 2 months ago, I immediately started picking out games I wanted. I was looking for games that really benefited from being on the small screen, not simply watered-down adaptations of console classics. This game proved to be just what I was looking for. Although I was a fan of the Panzer General games on the PC, there really are no good turn-based strategy games for my Xbox. Advance Wars 2 has the complete package: great graphics, engaging characters, and, most importantly, a wide variety of unit and terrain units that intermesh to form gameplay that never seems to get old. Gamers will find themselves constantly changing their strategies to outmaneuver the enemy. The units themselves range are divided into different types of ground troops, tanks, artillery, helicopters, and airplanes. Each unit can move at different rates and can fire at different ranges. Terrain also play a role. For instance, a tank can role through forests on it’s treads much more easily than a recon unit, which has to rely on tires. Certain units have unique abilities, like infantry and mech units, who are the only units that capture cities. All these units will have to utilized effectively against an computer AI that is remarkably crafty, particularly if one is playing the later missions of the campaign. I have also tried the multiplayer mode with a friend, which seems to me a bit like playing a game of chess in the park, only there are even more pieces in play. And this game, like chess, just doesn’t seem to get old.
