Advent Rising may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm more than satisfied with Majesco's valiant effort.
For one thing, Gideon (the game's main character) is not your average macho game hero. He's an average guy who just gets caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Beleive me, he's no Masterchief.
One part of the game that really stood out to me was the music. The orchestral pieces are truly breathtaking and they always seem to convey the action that is taking place in the game. I also found many uses for the first-person mode, either sniping down a lone seeker or just scoping out an area. The first-person mode was not as immersive or polished as say "Halo 2" or "Doom 3", but it certainly helped to give the game a unique and innovative feel.
I may have a positive attitude towards the game, but I cannot overlook the ever-present flaws. For one thing, I often found myself fighting blind because the camera was mysteriously locked in an inconvenient position for no particular reason. I also had many instances in which the game would freeze, requiring me to reboot my Xbox and redo the level from the last save point. But, I soon overcame these minor inconveniences and focused on the main innovations that the game had to offer.
All in all, Advent Rising may not be for everyone, but if you look beyond the bugs and flawed storyline, you may just see the true ambitious style that this gaming industry thrives on.
