You are the Commanding Officer of a Ticonderoga cruiser with the Aegis system fully equipped and ready to go.

User Rating: 6.2 | Aegis: Guardian of the Fleet PC
Aegis is actually the name of the radar system used first by the Ticonderoga class cruisers. Since Ticonderoga's were the only ships at one time that were the only ones equipped with it they became known as Aegis cruisers. Well enough with the Naval history lesson and into the review.

You are giving Command of a Ticonderoga ship and sent to defend and protect in three hot spots. You will relive some of the Battles of the Falklands. You will find yourself in the Persian Gulf facing off against a variety of platforms that will be attacking you. Finally you will find yourself expanding the Battle of Libya.

Gameplay: Simple point and click. You had a variety of screens from which to work with in the game. You could stand on the bridge and click the various areas you needed to go to. Or you could call them up using hotkeys. You had full control of your ship.

The game had three different difficulty settings you could choose from to suit your gameplay. Easy gave you full control of your ship plus the other ships around you and it also allowed you to have your weapons reload between each mission. Believe it or not this will be the setting you want to play with on this game. Medium gave you full control of your ship, plus the other ships around you, but you were only giving enough weapons for the whole battle. So if you used up all your weapons you were in some deep trouble. Finally hard you had full control of your ship and that was about it.

Now the reason you wanted easy is because the game's AI is extremely weak. Also for most missions you start the other ships tend to bunch together making themselves ideal targets. So being on easy you could attempt to get the ships into a semi-functional formation and hopefully they will repel any attacks.

The other reason is because even if you destroy an enemy target in a previous mission. For some reason it will still be around in the following missions. This includes aircraft that attack you and the other ships. On easy having your full complement of weapons helps you to deal with it and not have your ship get sunk on technicality.

Depending on how well you did on each mission you are giving a percentage at the end of the mission. If your percentage stays high enough you continue on. However if it is too low. You will go before a Naval Review Board. If you have to go before the board too many times you will lose your right to command a ship and it is game over.

Graphics: Were well above average for this game. While very basic and not to deep into 3D the game looked nice. There was one particular screen that gave you a 3D representation of your battlefield and allowed you to see where everything was. This include other ships and how close to land they were in the game. While you could not ground a ship it was still nice to keep your ships out in the ocean.

There were also a couple of cut-scenes that were used when launching or firing certain weapons on your ship.

Sound: I would put it at about average. Yeah you had the general quarters sound and a few nice booms and bangs but not much more.

Value: Aegis is not the best Naval simulation out there. Harpoon was much better even though it lacked in graphics. Aegis was simply eye candy.

Tilt: When I got this game I was expecting alot out of it. The fact that you had to constantly destroy targets you destroyed previously over and over again. Kind of took the fun out of the game. The game for your average player is going to be boring. It took me some time to figure out how to get the other ships to attack and help out. Again because of the game's AI the other ships even if they were being attacked directly would not defend themselves. Worse some of the other ships were only designed for say surface attacks, while others were either air or subsurface attacks. This was rough because at one point you did have to protect some carriers and they needed full protection. So if there was multiple targets to go after this would cause the level to drag on a bit longer then you would like to play it.

Overall though if you are into collecting Naval fighting games this is a good one to have in your collection. It is a bit rare so if you see it I would grab it.
