Black Falcon doesn't crash and burn, but unfortunately it doesn't do much either.

User Rating: 7 | After Burner: Black Falcon PSP
After Burner: Black Falcon is a PSP exclusive in the After Burner series. It falls short of the high standards set by Ace Combat, but it's still an enjoyable game because air combat is never boring.
The story is simple: a colonel in the Air Force goes rogue and his group steals thirteen deadly fighter aircraft called the 'Assassins.' The pilot is ordered to shoot them down so that they cannot be sold to terrorists. That's pretty much all the story is. The player can choose between three pilots: 'Sonic', a pilot who is the fastest in the world (no doubt a reference to Sonic the Hedgehog), 'Bull', a pilot who relies on artillery, and 'Shinshei', a pilot who is a perfect aviator. They each have their own skills and separate objectives. The player is assigned to missions from a clunky menu, but at least the load times are short. The player uses the Square button to fire a cannon, X to fire rockets, Circle button to fire missiles at ground targets. The player is usually ordered to shoot down a special plane or destroy a base. The gameplay is fun, but the game's presentation is mediocre: there is no voice acting, the menus are clunky, and the graphics are half-good at best. The explosion, water-splash and crash effects are poorly done, and the bullet and missile graphics are not even worth mentioning.
But the game is still quite fun: the sound effects are great, the gameplay is addictive and the drive to complete all objectives and unlock all planes offers some replay value. The music is amazing and the environments are also good. There are lots of obstacles to either dodge or crash into. The controls are good: there is an After Burner boost to speed the plane up and barrel rolls can be done to dodge attacks. Except for one flaw: when you do a barell roll, the plane becomes invincible even if a missile passes through it. There is a good number of missions to do and there is a multiplayer mode as well.
Overall, After Burner: Black Falcon isn't all that great, but it isn't all that bad either.
