A totally Underated remake of a classic shooter!

When I came in to pick up my reserved copy of After Burner: Black Falcon, the sales guy said to me "your the only person who reserved this game" and in my head I was wondering "why?" Then I got afraid that once again I have purchased another crappy game and when I trade it in I'll only get a quarter of what I paid for it! But that wasn't necessarily the case... The Good: What I really like about AB:BF is that it really stays true to the original. Instead of trying to totally revamp the game Sega actually looked at what made the old games great and added to it. The game is extremly fast paced and keeps the adrenaline pumping and never gets dull or boreing! The graphics are pretty decent, I mean it's no Ace Combat but it serves its purpose. I also thought the sound effects really rocks, especially when flying past things and missles whizzing by! What I also thought was great is that you can purchase and choose a variety of planes (including my favorite the SR71 Blackbird). They can all be customized and each one performs differently, which gives more reason to play thru. You can also go back and do previous missions and earn money, which helps you with the customazation. Although AB can be quite challenging it isn't impossible. Most of time deaths are caused by carelessness or not being fast enough, which actually makes you think fast and feel like you accomplished something at the end of a mission. The Bad: AB CAN get really frustrating sometimes due to one really big thing: you don't get enough lives! This wouldn't be so bad if you could gain more from completing objectives or getting a certain number of points. So many times that I've damn near finished a mission and I have to start over again! Yeah I know stop **** right. Anyway I also found that the parachutes (power ups you get if you take out a number of planes in a row) can be a pain to catch when your in a middle of an intense fight or they fly by on the totally opposite side of the screen. That can really get annoying when you need ammo or health. The music is pretty good but some of the tracks will have you wondering "who put that track together, a 5 year old!" And speaking of music, whenever the next track comes on the game breifly pauses to load which can be extremly dangerous during a battle! The Ugly: Be careful when your plane respawns cuz it could mean sudden death if your not paying attention! Final: AF: BF is a very fun game. despite it's flaws and it's a shame that it's not being recognized for what it is. I just hope Sega ignores that and brings out a sequel!
