If there's one thing that Air Combat proves it's that graphics don't make a game great.

User Rating: 7.5 | Ace Combat PS
When the Playstation was released in 1994, Sony wasn't the only company who was about to become successful. Namco, the company behind Pac-Man where also about to be even more successful with three Playstation launch titles that would later be considered classics like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Air Combat (later known as Ace Combat). The last-mentioned title have just like the rest of the games mentioned above aged a lot, but also manages to be very entertaining even today.

The country of Kaluga is in peril after terrorists forces initiate a coup d'état and start inflicting heavy damage on the country. After failing attempt to remove the threat, the desperate government assemble a mercenry air force to retaliate against the terrorists.

Air Combat is best described as Ridge Racer's cousin of flying games. The game throws realism out the window and instead creates an action packed arcade-style jet combat game. The main objective during each level is for the most part to take out a series of enemy fighter jet and sometimes a few ground targets. After every level you earn money which you can use to buy new and better planes to stash in your hangar. The gameplay isn't as repetative as it might sound. Firstly, the settings in the stages vary between everything from a city at nighttime to a canyon where your flying skills are given a real test. Secondly, it will never get old shooting down enemy aircrafts.

With the standard controller your planes handles good, every key command is perfectly assigned and the plane steers in a good way. You'll get even more enjoyment out of the game if you own a Namco NegCon, which doubles the good control and tripples the exitement you'll get from playing the game.

It might not seem fair to say that a game relesed in 1995 has bad graphics, but not in this case. The game has serious issues with texture mapping which looks flickery and draw-in distance where the environment pop up right before your eyes. The music on the other hand is, just like the Ridge Racer and Tekken games great and very uplifting.

If there's one thing that Air Combat proves it's that graphics don't make a game great. If you can get over somewhat shoddy graphics you should definitely give this one a closer look, but if you're very finicky with them, you might want to pass.
