AvP 2 ranks up there with original FPS classics like Doom, Half Life or System Shock 2, a true masterpiece !
Pro:
-Great sequel surpasses the orginal game (This game is in many ways better than the original AvP)
-Very scary (I assure you this is the scariest game from 2001 if you completely disregard Silent Hill 2 which came the same year)
-Terrific sound effects (This game has one of the best and most creepy sound effects ever, I mean it EVER)
-Great atmosphere (Creepy well scripted events will keep you thrilled)
-Choosing between Marine/Alien/Predator is a great idea (All three campaigns are all woven together into a nice story)
-Great Multiplayer (There are still avid fans who play this even nowadays)
-Overall strong presentation and production values (AvP 2 feels like a solid and well designed FPS, nothing to complain about it)
-Predators are awesome (so are Aliens ^^)
Contra:
-Short single player campaign (the three single player campaigns are kinda short and fast to finish)
-Graphics feel dated for today's standards (give this game a brake its back from 2001)
-Some ingame bugs (There are minor AI problems and other bugs in this game)
My Review:
Where to begin, AvP 2 is a true classic among first person shooters back from times when FPS were made exclusively for the PC and delivered strong gameplay and tense atmosphere. This game was made by Sierra and Monolith the same people who made later on the ultra-scary F.E.A.R. game (Another game I strongly recommend playing).
Basically for people who played the first game Aliens Vs. Predator made by Rebellion, know what formula awaits them in this one.
You can choose between the three races right from the start you can play as a Marine as the Alien monster from the movie and as well as the all awesome and powerful Predator. Every race has its advantages and disadvantages, the Marine for example has a large amount of weaponry for disposal, the Alien has the fastest movements and best eye-sight in darkness and the Predator has stealth cloak abilities and of course the slick thermal vision.
Each single player campaign is rather short and you can run through it in like about 4-6 hours.
What makes this game so incredible tense and scary is its sound effects, they are top notch, everything sounds well and you get the feeling of terror, especially during the Marines campaign weather you crawl through tight air vents or desolate dark corridors the sound effects will keep up the creepy mood.
Another strong point of this game is its lightning effects and scary level-design, it will blow you away, the graphics may seem dated and old and I know it won't appeal to some people who are used to Crysis or Far Cry 2. This game is not about graphics this game is about atmosphere and horror and that's what counts, the graphics are okay for the time of 2001 and I honestly enjoyed this game a lot. If you get the chance to get a copy of this from your bargin bin or ebay, buy it without a second thought because it definitely won't disappoint you.
