Alone in the Dark is an unforgivable mess.
The game starts in a white room. You are laying on a table listening to two men talking about killing you. For some reason, Atari thought it would be fun to have to make the main character blink. So you must press R3 over and over again just to keep your eyes open for two second intervals. You cannot skip cut scenes, so you must keep blinking for about five minutes. Which is ridiculously annoying. There are even parts in the game where you can only see enemies with your eyes open so you have to hold down R3 while battling enemies. The camera is terrible. You can choose to play the game in either first or third person, both of which cause some serious problems. In third person, the camera is fixed in an area and you cannot move it. The only way to get a close-up view on something is in first person, which is ultimately unusable. There are scenes in which you must drive a car through the city and avoid falling debris. If you hit any object in the road it is instant death for you, and you must restart at the last checkpoint, which usually involves watching the same cut scene over and over, as you cannot skip them. Also whilst driving, you have a passenger in the car with you who does not stop screaming and telling you to drive faster. To see this, watch the driving video. The monsters in this game are a joke. They are more laughable than scary.
This whole game is a mess. I had originally planned to get this game for the PS3, but as it's release was delayed for months I went ahead and bought the PS2 version. Upon ten minutes of playing this game, I wanted my money back. But of course you cannot return opened games. The trade-in value is only $4 USD. Do not buy this game, even if you loved previous Alone in the Dark titles. This is by far the worst game to ever touch the PS2.
