Not Bad for an obscure European FPS...

User Rating: 7.5 | Alpha Prime PC
Let me start off by saying I have a soft spot for obscure first person shooters. If people don't know about it, and it's decent, I need to get my hands on it. Well, this game is as obscure as it gets. The story works. You're the best miner in the galaxy, and your friend you don't talk to anymore because of a woman needs your help. The element you mine for is called hubbardium. For some (the player), it slows time, for others, insanity is on tap. This hubbardium is so concentrated on this asteroid, Alpha Prime, many people have gone crazy, and the radiation has even affected the mining robots, who now pack machine guns. However, the mining company believes there is something to this extremely high concentration of hubbardium, and have sent soldiers to attempt to retrieve it, with orders to kill everyone and everything in their path.

The game-play is fairly standard corridor crawl fps. Kill bad guys, find switch/hack computer to open a door, wash, rinse, repeat. As I'm playing this game after playing through Crysis, the graphics are nothing special. I played the game on the highest settings without a hiccup. (Intel quad core 2.4 GHz, NVIDIA 8800gts card) The biggest detriment to the game is the feeling of severely underpowered weapons. The damage they do is good, as 1 head shot from the machine gun will kill most enemies; however they barely make a sound. There is plenty of ammo and most levels have plenty of health. Enemies are EXTREMELY good shots, and sometimes they even take cover.

This was a pretty run of the mill game that I wouldn't have recommended because of the weapons feel until the last level. The storyline elements from this point really engaged me and made me want to keep playing. This game is a Prime example (pun intended) of how good writing can make up for a moderately bland game. If you have extra time in-between playing the big name games, I would recommend Alpha Prime.
