A surprising game with a few new features.

America's Army: Rise of a Soldier. Sounds a little like Close Combat: First to fight. When I heard that ubisoft was going to port America's Army to the Xbox, I was excited. I had played the PC version and loved it to death. Now the strategic Army shooter has finally hit the consoles. Is it really all that it's cracked up to be? Or is this just another Close Combat?

To be honest, I was pleasently surprised. While there are a few nasty glitches I encountered, this is a solid first person shooter with some really great new elements that add a nice twist in standard shooting . Unlike most shooters, America's Army incorporates a very innovative exp system that increases the skills of your choice. For example, if you gain a level, you distribute your stat points to accuracy, leadership and stamina. While it may seem subtle, this adds a whole new amount of variety and an extra starategic element to the game.

This feature even continues into the online aspect of the game, which makes for a very exciting online play. If you do not work well as a team, you will fail all the missions. Learn how to play to people's strengths and weaknesses, and you'll become a force to be reckonned with.

This is where the compliments stop. Now we move onto the flaws. This may be a very fun game, but it fails on both sound quality and graphics. The graphics look very muddy and unimpressive, leaving a bad taste in your mouth if you like to judge a book by its cover. Sound is no exception. SOme of the voiceover is awful, and I encountered a funny sound glitch in one area involving a soldier and the footstep sound. There are many glitches like this throughout the game, which also stops this game from being one of the best shooters around.

Despite all these flaws, if you're a fan of teambased strategic gameplay, you will most definately dig this game. Look past these flaws and you'll find a deep shooter that will keep you playing for a very long time. Couple that with an extremely deep multiplayer, and you havea game that people may be playing for years to come.

Once again, this is not the shooter perfection it was suppossed to be, but it is still a solid addition to any shooter fans' collection.
