Addictive, fun and challenging, it's easy to see why Angry Birds is one of the most popular games on the iphone/ipad
These multicolor birds are living peacefully until one day, a bunch of evil green pigs come along and steel their eggs. Outraged, the now "angry birds" must now fight these pigs.....by launching themselves at them. The story is a bit silly but this is perfect to set the lighthearted and witty mood that this game presents. For a game about shooting birds at pigs, what else can you expect?
The goal of the game is to kill all the pigs on the screen in each level and try to get the high score. To do this, using the touch screen, you must pull your bird back in the sling shot, aim, and launch. It isn't so easy though, for there are several obstacles getting in your way like rocks, wood, ice, glass, and more but these can also be used to your advantage to destroy the pigs (and causing more destruction earns you a higher score too). There's different strategies to take as each level only gives you a certain amount of birds and pigs to eliminate so you have to think and use them sparingly. That's not all though, as each bird you acquire throughout the game has different powers to help you; the blue birds are small but they can split into 3 birds after launch, yellow birds can pick up speed, bomb birds explode (duh), white birds drop egg bombs green birds spin back around like a boomerang (then there's the default red bird, which to my knowledge don't have an extra power). These birds make each level interesting as you must figure out how to use each bird you are given, which makes the game more challenging and strategic. Well, mostly, if only you didn't have to use them in the order given to you which defeats some of the strategy.
Each level feels unique as you travel to different regions and destroy those menacing pigs. Sometimes you can just flat out shoot birds at them but other times, the level is set up for you to take advantage of like pushing a tower of wood on top of a pig or hitting a rock with a bird, causing it to roll into a box of TNT that blow up the pig next to it. The only problem is the game's difficulty can occasionally jump. One level could be hard while the next could be easy as pie. The other problem is some level may seem to take trial and error to figure out and some may require luck. Either way, the challenge is fair for the most part. Each level is amusing and addictive and it compliments the gameplay well. It may be simple, but it sure as hell is fun.
The cartoony and colorful visuals and pleasing to the eye and some of the best you'll find in any app game. Each level has a unique style to it and no two truly look the same. The music isn't the greatest but I'm sure the majority of you will remember the theme song and victory music when you complete a stage. The best part of the sound is the funny noises the birds make when you launch them or the pigs laughing at you when you screw up.
Whether you rely on strategy, physics or even just plain old luck, Angry Birds is one of the most simple yet addictive games you will ever play on your iPhone, iPad, Android or whatever mobile device you own. With over 200 levels for just $3 or less (depending on what version you get), Angry Birds sure gives you a bang for its buck and you'll be playing for hours on end. If you enjoy the simpler puzzle games and just want a good time waster, Angry Birds should be your first pick.
