A PS1 review after all this time
User Rating: 9.4 | Ape Escape PS
Ape Escape. The platformer that redefined platformers, by forcing you to use a dual shock controller. Some people really hated that. I loved it, because I have only ever used dual shocks. Enough about that. Gameplay: One of the best platformers I have ever played. Intuitive and yet inventive. The use of gadgets is controlled by the right stick, the face buttons control camera and gadget selection, left stick moves your character, and shoulder buttons make sense. A 10 for it's time. Graphics: Okay, so they are a little cartoony. But they are cultishly popular. They even made it into a Metal Gear Solid game on the PS2. Now that says something. Bright, cheerful, but a bit rough. 8 then. Sound: A low point. Not a really low point, but not enough to make it memorable as a soundtrack or voice acting masterpiece. 7 Value: A very high value. Even after you finish the game, you still go to catch the rest of the monkeys, then you have the time attacks, and monkey boxing! 10 out of 10, especially when packaged with the dual shock. Tilt: I found this game very enjoyable. One particular problem bugged me, and it was that a couple of areas had slightly awkward layouts or slightly unusual puzzles that were a little counter intuitive. A 9.5 though, ah make it another 10. Great game, if you can still find it.
