A significant visual improvement of the original, Archon Ultra continues to offer outstanding gameplay.
The game features the same basic chessboard play and action arenas of the original, only now, your armies have secondary attacks, so you never really know what your opponent is going to do anymore. This makes things much more challenging and far less predictable.
Overall, however, the game feels a little slower than the predecessor and doesn't necessary have the same flow to it. This may have been my poor 486SX at the time, so I did not take off for the gameplay. Regardless, there is reduced stability with the well-detailed VGA visuals, and even the sound will occasionally lock up on a strikingly loud note or chord.
The visuals and sound effects are excellent though, when the game is working fully, and overall, is a great redrawing of the original Archon.
