User Rating: 5.7 | Arkanoid: Doh It Again SNES
Arkanoid - Doh is a game with a really peculiar title. Playing it I couldn't figure out what that was about. But all in all, this game is a good arcade style game with some nice additions from the traditional Arkanoid game. There is a plot that is supposed to be there to help you through the game. But I can't understand how by destroying bricks and wobbly aliens you are supposed to be doing anything of much use. Gameplay: 7/10 There is not much to Arkanoid. Move the paddle around and bounce the little ball into the bricks and make sure the ball doesn't go past you. Certain bricks will randomly drop upgrades which do things like allow you to shoot lazers, make your paddle longer, create an electrical barriar that the ball can't cross... etc. This does add some excitement to the game as sometimes you don't want certain bonus that are unhelpful. The game boards are creative and fun. The best part about the game is very so often, you get sort of a 'boss' monster that you try to bounce your ball off of enough times to kill it. For example, there is a worm like thing that shots at you. As you avoid its shots, you keep your ball alive and attack the monster with it. Graphics: 7/10 The graphics aren't bad. They are colorful and the animation is smooth. The little alien things are cute, but not at all intimidating. The boss monsters could have used a little more work to make them scary or something. But all in all, the graphics don't need to be very complex. Sound: 3/10 The sound is what brings this game down. The introduction is annoying to the point that you wonder if you will play the game long. There aren't very many exciting sounds during the game other then the annoying beeps when you hit the blocks. The beeps come in different pitches depending on the type of block. The explosion sounds are weak as well. Reviewer's Tilt: 5/10 Arkanoid is one of those games that has a cult following. Not being in that group, I found this game a little dull. There were some nice perks, but not enough to keep me interested for long.
