$10 Million Dota 2 International Exceeds Super Bowl, Masters, and Tour de France Prizes

The crowd-funded prize pool for the International Dota 2 Championships is the biggest eSports prize pool in history.

No Caption Provided

The prize pool for this year's International, the championship tournament for Valve's PC multiplayer battle arena game Dota 2, has just crossed the $10 million line. For comparison, this means that the payout to the top teams is now more than the prizes for the 2014 Masters golf tournament, which total a meager $9 million.

This also marks the world record for biggest reward in history for an eSports tournament. It crushes last year's mark of $2.8 million, which was the biggest eSports prize to date. When the Compendium launched in May, its proceeds raised the prize from its initial $1.6 million to $2.2 million in its first night. You can check out some of the other comparable prizes and salaries below (credit to The Verge for the idea):

Valve has collected this much in prize money by crowd-sourcing the pool. People can buy Compendiums which contain in-game items that unlock as the pool increases in amount. At the $10 million mark, owners of the Compendium unlocked the Victory Prediction Taunt for the game.

Each Compendium costs $10 to purchase, and 25% of the proceeds go to the prize pool. This is obviously big business for Valve, and it serves to raise awareness for its game while also bringing in a lot of money.

The International 2014 takes place between July 18-21 in Seattle. It will be held in Seattle's Key Arena, with a seating capacity of 17,000.

Well, its looks fun. But it kinda ruins the atmosphere for me, in like, it might be too silly in a way... Probably gonna pick it up anyway.

Jesus, it raised the pool from 1.6mil to 10mil, that's 8.4mil from the crowd. And that's only 25% so Valve made like 25mil off these books.

The Superbowl isn't about winning the game and getting a huge check, it's about performing well on a massive stage and getting a huge (much larger than $10 million) contract next time you're up to negotiate. See Joe Flacco from a couple years ago for a recent example.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Dude makes a perfectly valid point and it is unjust but as the man below states you would also have to include actors, sportsmen, tv personalities, useless celebrities, politicians and many other people who make way more than your dr's nurses, firemen and the like.

There are football players that make almost half a million a week to kick a fuckin ball around and beyond that they are mostly idiots who would struggle to count past 100.

@fede018 What country are you referring to where doctors make less than 50k? I'm not saying it's not true, but I'm guessing it would have to be in at least somewhat poor nations.

EDIT: Also a lot of doctors are actually self employed, so how much they make is a factor of how many patients, how much they want to work, etc., although in countries with public health care there is usually a limit to how much they can bill the govt.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm from Czech Republic (public helth care, not poor nor rich country). I'm also a med student and doctors here are paid between 132.000CZK/6.500USD(after graduation) to 840.000CZK/41.500USD (well paid doc) a year. I kinda envy doctors in rich countries.

Nonetheless I totally support 10M prize for DOTA 2. I believe in eSports and want to raise conscious about it!

the 10 mil milestone was really weak

"preform a voice taunt with your hero"

so you can just say it's in the bag (valve's money bag) with your hero...

still this is a huge moment for gaming's yearly tournements to put such a huge prize

all thanks to the community

IIRC the taunt is you betting on winning (well so reward that, and in forst few mins only) and if you make predictions your team will win u get some bragging rights. So I think youll have a prediction stat X/Y right.

Kinda fun for the community

That's bigger than the GDP of some small countries. Wow. It will be like the end of Die Hard 3, and the winners will have to consider "which country we want to buy!" :)

GDP ? Heck no.

GDP of even the most poorest countries(excluding city states) would go into the billions.

@spacecadet25 @bldgirsh well, $10 million dollars divided by 10 = a million people (just for 1 game). I dont even play Dota at all, so if just 1 game can get that kind of funding for a tournament, its not even league of legends players or WOW players or counter Strike players or world of tanks players or all the other PC games being played right now. Just think how many people TRULY play games on PC that dont play multiplayer games at all. Thats how HUGE PC gaming is.

Train your body physically day in and day out to achieve maximum performance from your abilities; Make less money than an "athlete" who trains himself in mountain dew and finger exercises.

If I understand this correctly, Valve's share of the proceeds is $30 million. Half-Life 3 confirmed.

If you're not generally against people earning vast ammounts of money, like say actors, singers, athletes etc. on principle (which is a viable opinion), then you shouldn't really have any issues with a great game developer & service provider also getting rich.
