14 Years In, Resident Evil 5 Removes Games For Windows Live, Fixes Split-Screen

The ancient PC version of Resident Evil 5 received an unexpected update recently, removing Games For Windows Live.

You probably haven't thought about Resident Evil 5 in a while, but Capcom apparently has. The Steam version of one of the campiest entries in the beloved series recently received a small patch that removes support for the long-dead Games for Windows Live. The good news is that this also restores the default split-screen feature to the game, which was disabled on PC due to GFWL.

If you aren't familiar, Games for Windows Live was a key part of a Microsoft initiative to connect PC games to its servers. The service launched in 2007, never saw much uptake, and was retired in 2014. These days, it's better-known for causing glitches and compatibility issues in games from that era--the original Dark Souls being perhaps the most notable example--requiring developers to issue patches for old games in order to resolve that. It apparently took Capcom 14 years to get around to it, but if you're playing a game with GFWL issues, it's usually best to check the PCGamingWiki to see if fans have developed workarounds.

Now Playing: 25 Years Of Resident Evil

Resident Evil 5 was the first game in the series to truly focus on co-op play, allowing two players to experience the entire game together from beginning to end. It is generally regarded as significantly worse than the game that proceeded it, the landmark Resident Evil 4, which will soon receive a full remake. RE5 arguably marked the beginning of a dark era for the series, which bottomed out with the almost universally reviled RE6. RE5 is also notable for the controversy surrounding its depiction of African people, which was widely condemned as racist at release. Its wildly campy final sequence, in which player character Chris famously punches a boulder, is also considered memorable by fans.

I don't know that I'd say RE5 was worse than 4. As a single player game, it sucked, but that co-op was fun as heck.

Oh, and it turns out GFWL was technically removed when they released the Gold Edition of RE5 on Steam,.

@Barighm: Haha, that was kind of what made it so funny. GFWL didn't exist anymore, but the game wanted you to log into GFWL to play it. Of course there were 3rd party mods and patches for that, but I still found it a bit funny that it was asking for login to a service that hadn't even existed anymore for years.

A lot of people thought about RE5, actually. The last gen version sold surprisingly well. Heck, RE6 scored a greatest hits edition. Even better, removing this makes a DRM free option more likely (but not by much).

Wow. There is some serious bias in this article. I didn't like RE6 much either, but that's the sort of thing you see in random internet posts, not a professional article. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn Wright is one of the haters I have ignored at GameFAQs.

Lol Resident Evil 6 "Universally Reviled" as it sits with an 80% approval rating.

And Resident Evil 5 was "significantly worse" than RE4? As it sits at an 88% approval rating, and as Gamespot ranks it as an 8.5/10.

C'mon guys, it is one thing to not check stuff on the internet so you can fact check your stories, but it's a whole new ballgame when you actually ignore your OWN WEBSITES PAST and ITS PAST ARTICLES AND RATINGS.

@RELeon: I'm old enough to remember, people HATED 6 on release. PS3 version has a 5.7 user score on Metacritic. A lot of folks have come around to it over the years, appreciating what it is instead of what they thought it should be, but at the time gamers were mad.

Also RE4 got a 9.6 from GS back in the day. 8.5 isn't bad, but you could call it "significantly worse" than that.

@judaspete: I dunno. I guess that all depends on your definition of the severity of "significant." 1.1 points difference in a 10 point system is an 11% difference. Scientifically that is "significant," but in the gaming industry, I would chalk that up more to "mildly less positive reception than the previous title."

And yeah, lol. You are absolutely correct. I remember how badly people hated on 6 too. A lot still do. And we can be honest, it IS the worst one in the franchise. But a lot of the hate was from people who just "heard" it sucked, so they hated on it. Seems to be the trend with gamers the past decade. Much of the hate you hear on games are just from people who heard or read about how it sucked, and never actually played it.

Either way, I think the article should have addressed the past AND the present reception of all the games, seeing as how the article was addressing a current event based on a past game, and referenced both. As they stand now, they are all ranked higher by the player base than a "significant" amount of games nowadays. Critic reception is probably still terrible, but let us be real here, reviews by critics are generally heavily flawed by the fact that it is usually a single person reviewing a game, and their bias will influence the score "significantly." When you have tens of thousands of gamers who say the game isn't too shabby, and 1-10 critics who say it sucks, take your pick which to believe, but I tend to believe the gamers.

And goddamn, this turned into my own TED Talk. Thanks for listening!

@judaspete: No, what it is still sucks. There's a number of clunky design elements that still drag it down to this day and that's with regards to its action mechanics, not the lack of horror elements. If they had just fixed those problems, then, yeah, the game would count as a very good action title.

@RELeon: At this point it's hardly a secret this site is more of a blog than journalism. And it's not like Wright will ever read these comments.

RE5 is actually the most successful game in the franchise, with RE6 not far below it. Even if RE7 surpasses it, it would have done so at mostly bargain bin prices.

@Barighm: RE 5 sold well, but there was a lot of fan backlash for the focus on action. 5 and 6 were accused of abandoning the series roots in pursuit of the filthy casuals, and it it kinda worked since they sold well. But the "real fans" were definitly mad about it at the time.

@judaspete: We had two decently good RE games, code veronica and rE4, ignoring the portables and wii RE games. So expectation for 5 was high. RE4 kept enough horror and jump scares, to offset the action set pieces, which was satisfying for your money spent.

Your right, the coop and action took re5 down a new route that was less horror and more action adventure. (it was not good at either) and it was not what fans expected.

6 was pretty bad, I got a refund for that game. And it was on console.

I have heard the argument that RE 5 and 6 sold well. But if you look at the deep dive on gameindustry. com More of the world is buying games each year then the previous. Also with digital, more ease of access. RE5 had tons of built up demand regardless, and RE6 had some of the deepest price cuts 6mnths, and 1 yr after it came out. Making it easier to move a sku, as it chased the used gaming bin to below the bottom. Just saying, every new game will have potentially a higher chance to sale more. But when a game does not meet its sales expectation, and fan sentiment that they will wait till a price drop an not launch is something, any publisher does not want to hear.

@judaspete: It actually began with RE4. The difference is, unlike what's happening with FF, RE4 was a GOAT tier game, and RE5 is GOAT tier for co-op. The fans do have a point, since I don't see why they can't have two parallel running franchises, the core being horror and a secondary action franchise alongside it-Chris' chapters in the recent games already sort of do that-but that doesn't excuse a blatant lack of professionalism and journalistic integrity.

@CurseYouAll: That first RE4 PC port was some real butt though. Use the original GameCube score.

@CurseYouAll: That score is reflective of the initial pc port. The Gamecube version scored a 9.6 here.

@nintendians: No. I like the shooting gallery nature of RE4 and 5, although I do like RE5's controls more. That little side step makes a world of difference.

@uninspiredcup: not much really, playing with wiimote and nunchuck (re4 wii) already feels kind of quick.
