1.5 billion iPhone 'games' sold, Game Center launches next week

Apple claims iPod Touch is "number one gaming platform in world"; online multiplayer gaming service goes live next week with leaderboards, matchmaking, and achievements.

At an event in April, Apple unveiled the iPhone Game Center, which was billed as "a social network for gaming," one that operates in a fashion similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live platform for the Xbox 360. Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised the service will offer portable gamers matchmaking services, friends lists, leaderboards, achievements, and a singular gamer name for use across all titles.

Remember, that 1.5 billion figure includes fart apps.
Remember, that 1.5 billion figure includes fart apps.

First saddled with a vague "summer" release, the iPhone Game Center now has a much less nebulous launch date. As covered by GameSpot sister site CNET, Jobs announced the service will launch next week at an Apple event in San Francisco. He also demonstrated the service's various features, including the ability to challenge random players "if you don't have any friends," joked Jobs.

Game Center will be available to users of the iPhone and iPod Touch. Jobs boasted today that the iPod Touch is now "the number one portable game player in the world," outselling both the Nintendo DS and PSP combined. He also trumpeted the fact that some 1.5 billion iPhone/iPod Touch OS games have been sold to date.

That said, the slide behind Jobs undermined his claim. It clearly stated that 1.5 billion "Games and Entertainment" titles had been sold to date. The "Games" category covers both polished titles, such as 2K Games' $10 Civilization Revolution, a port of the acclaimed DS version, and $0.99 casual titles, such as Solitaire. The "Entertainment" category covers an even broader swathe of nongaming applications, such as Run Pee Mobile, which tips moviegoers about opportune bathroom break times at a showing, and 18,000 Cool Jokes, a conversation aid to the humor impaired.

Also unveiled at Apple's event were three new game-capable iPod Touch models: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399.

@DiscGuru101: "Yet Apple alone marks up the prices 400%..." Should one assume a certain Redmond, Washington-based corporation doesn't profit from inflated Microsoft-branded Xbox 360 hard drive and storage device prices? << LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>

The only good iPhone games are the ones meant for touch controls: Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle, Bejeweled, and any card and board games. As for the rest, I really tried to play Madden and Resident Evil but without a D-pad and buttons I just couldn't get into it. I need to feel whether I am going right or left.

I don't have a iPhone or do i ever need a Cell phone for that matter, people are really taking their cell phones to seriously... maybe I'm just anti social, but come on, if i wanted to call someone i'd use my regular phone, I'll leave my games at home or on my DS. Whats the world coming to where you need games on cell phones? geez.

@ DiscGuru101: FYI: Foxconn, Apple's China-based manufacturing partner, also assembles components for Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony - which represents the vast majority of PC- and console-based gaming hardware.

I bought the iPhone for other reasons, but then was surprised at the quality (for a cheap price) that the games are. Nintendo should just give in and release some of their titles on the App Store. They'd make a fortune.

iPhone is made in China by (virtual) slaves then marked up 400% If that ever changes, I will take their "gaming products" more seriously.

the 3ds and psp2 now need IPS based lcd screens at 960x640 (or higher) and faster processors than apples A4, and dual cameras and launch at around $225 (the 8gb ipod touch) because right now the PspGo sitting at $250 is a joke. If Apple is able to offer this at $225 Sony/Nintendo really need to take a close look at what they plan on releasing at around the same price point. High res screen? check. Fast processor? check. Excellent mobile web browser? check. Product that dosent look like a kids toy? check. Apple just made the 3ds launch and especially its launch price all the more interesting, the only reason i WONT be buying one is that the games are crap, and theres no dedicated controls.

I would prefer that Apple gives the sales of iPhone games in fiscal terms, not just numeral ones. Here are << LINK REMOVED >> for the more curious of you. If the average iPhone game price is to be believed, then Apple had earned about US$ 1.8 billion from games alone since App Store launched in July, 2008. If one is to look at, say, << LINK REMOVED >>, any one of them would have a total revenue value estimated to be higher than that for the iPhone games sector. Of course, the caveat is that how much of that money that Apple - or other platform proprietors - pockets is not known for certain, but I believe that Apple cannot demand a cut with a percentage higher than those demanded by other proprietors. The way I see it, this is just Steve Jobs blowing his mouth off again. He's quite a blustery person who would love to boast about Apple's successes whenever there is an opportunity. Little wonder why his erstwhile partner and fellow Apple founder Steve Wozniak left. << LINK REMOVED >>, another Apple co-founder, probably despises him even more.

i think he is saying that the ipod outsells psps and stuff because people primarily use them for music, and iphones for talking on the phone(WHEN THEY WORK!) so you cant say an iphone/pad/pod is outselling a dedicated gaming console. that is like saying the psp is outselling... the digital camera.

Is Jobs aware that new iPod games on average sell at 1.99 while PSP games sell at 39.99? The funny thing is that I have yet to find any iPod game that's worth 2$ while I bought multiple 40$ PSP games and didn't regret it. Most iPod games are really bad primarily due to the lack of proper controls.

People who complain about "fart apps" are really starting to get on my nerves... It isn't like there aren't a bunch of fart apps for traditional consoles, handhelds, and PC's already... The only difference is they are FREE or really cheap on the iPhone instead of $20 or more... Whether it be Apple, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, or whoever, a sale is still a sale and how can you blame them for putting a positive spin on one of there main products?

Nothing Apple does is any good, generally speaking their stuff is full of great ideas but they are not carried out very well. Their computers however are not so bad, if I had the cash I'd so jump ship for an iBook or something. I'd still keep my PC but I want a system that can never get a virus......that's my thing iPhone sucks, buy a phone with Android, it's better especially the Motorolla Androids.....

Nothing compared to consoles games plus those game are free or cost a buck each who care if they sold a milion, its still BS and not worth buying a 200+ mp3 player to play game instead of a ps3 and play with HD graphics in my humble opinion...

Wow. Just... Wow. Who cares whether it's true or not? It's sales jargon. Does anybody expect any different from Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony? No, because they all try and twist the numbers in exactly the same way. I take all of these sales figures with the same grain of salt as I do from any other company. Tor Thorsen, as a "journalist", and I use the term loosely, you disappoint me. Next time you do a piece, don't pour so much of your own bias into it. It's obvious that you dislike Apple just from reading it, but that has no place in reporting.

Let the Apple bashing begin! I guess if you're going just by sales figures, then yeah I agree with what Jobs said. As far as the iPhone/iTouch being real contenders as "gaming platforms," I just don't see it. Apple is announcing a new device this week... maybe it's a peripheral for the iPhone/iTouch to make gaming easier. You know, with buttons.

The Ipod Touch is A MUSIC PLAYER. And Apple might've sold a load of "games", but that doesn't make it any different from the Android or Blackberry app store. I'm pretty sure nobody would buy an Ipod just to "game" on it.

so ipod sold more then 44 mil units of nds ???? .....awesome 1.5 billion "Games and Entertainment" titles had been sold to date???? 2x awesome Apple claims iPod Touch is "number one gaming platform in world" ???? nooooo i dont think so!!! i have an iphone, and i barely use it for games instead i use my nds a lot,and any user (of the iphone) may have more then 3 games on the phone but most games cost like 0.99 $ and on nds a game cost like 30$ , apple has cut out the firs generation of iphone/ipod user for the firmware 4.0 so you cant play the lastes games(that require the os 4.0) and i think out there ,there are a lot of iphone/ipod first generation so in the end i wouldn't consider iPod number one gaming platform in world

There are some "okay" games for ipod touch and iphone, but that's "extremely" rare and most games have "horrible" controls. I wouldn't consider it a gaming device either.

1% of Iphone "games" are worthwhile. but since it has NO buttons, I cant take it seriously. GTA Chinatown wars is a great price though. If i had an iphone or ipodtouch, that would be 1 game I'd get. BUT i like my PSP just fine. I love that new commercial from Sony that makes fun of Iphone "games." << LINK REMOVED >>
