Sony's $160 Platinum wireless headset will launch in January 12, 2017, the company announced today in a PlayStation Blog post.

As explained in the post, the premium headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound using Sony's 3D audio technology. The headset works with PlayStation VR and mobile devices through the 3.5mm audio cable that it comes bundled with.

A patch for Naughty Dog's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will add support for 3D audio in January 2017, becoming the first to have it. Other games, including MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Days Gone will also support it.

Watch the video above to hear what Naughty Dog developers have to say about how they think 3D audio will enhance the Uncharted 4 experience. One example that Naughty Dog provides is a sequence where Drake is in an attic and Elena calls to him from downstairs. With 3D audio, you'll hear Elena calling from below, boosting the immersion of the scene, director Neil Druckmann says. Another example is that you'll hear gunfire from all around you during shootouts.

"With games, I think for a long time the picture has always been in the forefront of where you see the advances as we go from generation to generation," he added. "But audio has been having these same leaps and bounds."

In Canada, the headset will go for $200 CAD. It was supposed to launch in the holiday 2016 window, but was later delayed to 2017.
