32 million people watched League of Legends Season 3 World Championships

Final becomes the most watched eSports event in history, with more than 8.5 million fans watching simultaneously at peak.

More than 32 million people watched the League of Legends Season 3 World Championships final in October online and on TV, Riot Games announced today. This makes the event the most watched eSports event in history, the company said.

By comparison, Game 6 of the 2013 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals drew 18 million viewers. The 2013 Super Bowl was watched by over 108 million people.

In the final on October 4 at a sold-out Staples Center, SK Telecom T1 took down Royal Club to claim the Summoner's Cup and a $1 million prize. During its peak, more than 8.5 million people watched the finals simultaneously.

The numbers for the Season 3 World Championships are up substantially year-over-year. The Season 2 World Championships drew 8.2 million viewers in total and 1.1 million peak simultaneous viewers.

It's astounding how this simple game that's fairly new (2009) has took the gaming world by storm, props Riot.

Hmm, these numbers seem high , so where did all these people watch the final? because on twitch it never got above i think it was around 300-500k and half of those numbers were bots. and the rest was some active and others just idling in the room.

Still its nice numbers but unconfirmed numbers are just unconfirmed.

It never ceases to amaze me how many actual gamers are so hesitant to acknowledge e-sports as a thing that people are interested in. Just because it's not considered a real sport, which is fine... It doesn't fit into the same category as physical sports. But they are still highly competitive and not everyone who has ever picked up a controller in their life can do the things these pro gamers can, it takes an enormous amount of skill and mastery of your craft... Just like real sports. Well, whatever. good for LoL and the e-sports scene... I'm not a LoL player or even a viewer of e-sports but none the less this is very impressive. It's a shame more gamers aren't too supportive of this stuff, because I can see this as the kind of thing that helps gaming come out to the masses as not just something that's for losers or a waste of time, but something that people can dedicate their lives to without fear of being looked down upon by the average non-gamer. Just like pro athletes.

@Aletunda There are actually multiple seasons! And they last for several months. North America and Europe have the League Championship Series (LCS), Korea has the Champions league and China/other regions also have their own.

Its funny how ignorant and arrogant people are, you dont have to like league infact you can hate it if you got nothing but negitive shit to say why bother saying it. Only reason people have to comment and put in there 2 cents they have to feel there opinion means something when it means nothing at all. You dont have to like something to respect what they've achieved, its just like sports where people are like oh i hate the patriots or i hate this sports star etc its like do you know them personally what u hate them over a game oh what u hate them cause u live somewhere and thats not where you live. Its so pathetic

I'm not a big eSports person, but I do enjoy watching the LOL/DOTA championships. The high level pros do some crazy stuff sometimes and the teamwork makes it interesting. Plus it's all a top down view, so you can easily tell what's going one (vs. watching FPS multiplayer games that are hard to spectate).

I'm not going to start buying gamer jerseys or live tickets, but to me it's more entertaining than watching baseball. To each their own, I say.

It would be wanderful to see where they got all these views from, it certainly wasn't from any public streaming site, and measuring how many people watched on TV is not only difficult as it mostly relies on surveys, but unlikely as you would assume fans of this would be on their far more convenaint computers....

Sorry, but I do not see where these several million views came from, they are either lying or have mixed up some numbers at some point.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I know, the Twitch stream was reportedly around 300,000 concurrent, and was one of the largest sites for that, so if it wasn't from any of these public streaming sites then where on earth did that massive majority of views come from?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Countries other than the US of A. The final was a South Korean team against a Chinese team - both those regions have huge eSports followings. The English Twitch stream was just one of the English streams for the event. If anything, the numbers reported are lower as I imagine that viewing parties were treated as a single viewer.

It's true no matter how much people on gamespot like to bash and troll (which is a lot of people). Dota 2 got a crap load of views for the finals as well.

To answer the question as to why more league of legends players aren't spamming this forum... reddit. Almost all league of legends player comment there, not forums like this where it is full of CoD noobs and console fanboys. It is just a waste of time because no matter what anyone says, some troll will come and shit talk them.

I remember Dota 2 and that fucking Compendium crap. Yeah thanks Valve, I love looking at nerdy Asians, thanks for giving me pointless card drops every time I play a game. An to think that peoples purchases actually paid at least half their prize money. Foolish people. This is why game watching is bad. An yeah, enjoy Twitch an shit like that on your Xbones.

Sports is different. People train hard to become athletes and sportsmen and it takes great physical effort. Whilst it isn't as mentally challenging, put one of those nerds on a field an they'll be crying it's too cold. Oh no wait a second, by << LINK REMOVED >> 's reasoning anybody who watches drama on TV must then become an actor/actress, or a murderer, or a super hero, etc etc

Lol this just show that you've never actually played any kind of games involving actual strategy. You learn mainly by watching or playing against people better than you. That's how it works.Same thing with chess or any activity involving more mental activity than just aiming at a target and shooting.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Like you said "videogames" are different. You can actually learn to play better by watching pros and their tactics...... wait!...actually the same way a sports viewer can learn tactics watching his favorite sport!. You can watch a pro chess player and learn his moves, and so on. It doesn't mean you're magically going to become a pro.

And btw when you pay for tickets, merchandising, ppv matches or buy something from a sports team sponsor, that money goes to the players too.

I guess if you've ever tried watching streams on Twitch then you probably just assume all things like this suck. Well let me tell you guys, these games are intense and pretty interesting. I just hate the new in-house apps coming to to next gen consoles that will have everyone and their brother streaming their boring, skill-less matches. But there will always be events like this where you can watch some actual matches of skill and strategy.
