3DS And Wii U eShops Are Shutting Down Today

It's goodbye to an era of eShops.

Nintendo is officially closing 3DS and Wii U eShops today, March 27. This is the last chance to buy 3DS and Wii U games from both eShops.

Nintendo announced its decision to sunset both eShops back in Feburary 2022, confirming that while users will still be able to redownload games, receive software updates, and play online even after the shops' closures, new purchases will no longer be possible. Users will also be unable to play free demos or add funds to their Nintendo eShop accounts via the 3DS or Wii U.

Beyond March 27, users with remaining funds in 3DS or Wii U eShops will still be able to use the money towards Switch purchases in the Nintendo eShop. Users can merge their wallets by linking their Nintendo Network ID and Nintendo account.

If you're wondering how much it is to buy every game soon-to-be-delisted, Jirard "The Completionist" Khalil has an answer. The YouTuber spent $22,791 in total on all Wii U and 3DS games in the eShop. Khalil will donate a portion of the games to organizations like the Video Game History Foundation.

We also put together a list of 3DS and Wii U games you should buy before they vanish from the official digital storefronts. Some of them include Kirby Planet Robobot, a great Kirby game, Fire Emblem Fates--the physical edition costs tons of cash, so it's much cheaper to pick up digitally--and Pocket Card Jockey, the solitaire horse racing game.

The emulation market has been the best place to play classic games for a long time. Paying anything for media 20 or 30 years old is insane. None of that money goes to the original developers and dosen't fuel any growth for its ip. Heck the best way to play Nintendo's current generation games is through emulation, I'll still buy the new games but they run a heck of a lot better on a pc. The qualities from emulation and the preservation of those classics make Nintendo and other companies gouging tactics worthless.

I tried to access the 3DS storefront days before the deadline but despite googling and trying multiple methods, could not add funds to my account. I wanted to support Nintendo in a legal way as opposed to other methods - their discontinuation of support though understandable, is also disappointing to say the least. I expect similar lack of support for the original Switch when the Switch 2 is launched along with continued price-gouging for new titles up until that point. Nintendo clearly doesn't care about their customer base, and mabye they don't have to and all companies are going down this path.

Whilst I enjoyed Breath of the Wild, i will wait and see what the general public thinks of the sequel before buying (my fear of reused assets without enough new content), but I must say I will be purchasing a lot less Nintendo stuff from now on due to the company ethic and the fact that other better platforms and methods for playing games exist including the Steam Deck and also emulation etc. I think for all companies its a race to the bottom with the consumer paying higher prices for declining returns. Nintendo should be ashamed though, and provide alternate ways for content to be purchased legally for systems still beloved.

And I have no money to buy anything I actually wanted on it. And my bank won't give me a loan. Because... Well... Besides the face. People under 30 can't get a loan to save their life, literally.
