3DS to receive right analog pad, Monster Hunter - Report

Nintendo developing new peripheral to be used on right side of system; Monster Hunter 3G for 3DS outed for end of year release.

If recent rumors are to be believed, Nintendo is developing a second analog pad attachment for its 3DS handheld. Now, thanks to online leaks of the upcoming issue of Famitsu (via Andriasang), it looks like those rumors are proving accurate.

Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.
Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.

According to scans from the magazine, Nintendo is developing a peripheral that adds a second circle analog pad to the 3DS. From pictures on the Famitsu article, the device looks like it will attach to the back of the 3DS (like the system's charge cradle), with the analog stick on the right side. Because the right side of the device blocks the existing right trigger, the attachment also comes with its own trigger button. Currently, there is no release date set for the add-on.

Famitsu also unveiled that Capcom is developing a Monster Hunter title for the 3DS. Titled Monster Hunter 3G, the game will use the swimming mechanics of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, and it will feature 12 categories of weapons, touch-screen controls, and local wireless play.

Details on whether the new Monster Hunter title will use the 3DS StreetPass system have yet to be confirmed. The game is slated to be out in Japan by the end of the year and will be playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

An English localized version of the title has yet to be confirmed.

Stupid. I'm disappointed. This is absolute proof that the 3DS was released too early. That's if no one could tell already with the extremely poor selection of games thus far.

Just like Nintendo to screw over their early adopters. Soon they'll release a new 3ds lite with this built in. It's the same thing that happened with the wii. Releasing the motion plus for extra and then releasing new remotes later on with then built-in along with a big middle finger to those actually bought the motion plus adapters

Wow, as ghetto as this may seem, I'm so glad Nintendo is ensuring that the 3DS will not become the next PSP. The PSP FAILED because of it's missing analogue stick. I'm glad Nintendo is FIXING THIS ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This peripheral is a one-off, not an admission of a design flaw. Think about it, if you latch a second analog pad onto the thing that leaves you with two action buttons. How is that going to make anything better? With console controllers you have access to two triggers, two buttons and you can even press down on the analog sticks for a total of 6 action buttons. The Monster Hunter game is the big story here and frankly I bailed on the Wii version after about 5 minutes, it really didn't do anything for me that Phantasy Star Zero didn't do far better.

What a ghetto solution. No developer can even make a game that mandates it because not everyone will have it. This is why Nintendo should have designed it with two sticks in the first place. You'd think they would have learned from the PSP's mistake and common complaints.

I for one would welcome a little more bulk to hold on to while using my 3DS. It's ugly, I will give you that but it's reminiscent of the larger DSi XL and I really liked how that felt in my hands compared to all the previous DS models. And I don't have large hands at all! Frankly, this new attachment looks bulky and cumbersome, especially for little kids, or anyone with small hands. Might as well just compensate us for this too with a coupon for a free 3DS (wishful thinking, I know), once the complete version is out. Then again, given Nintendo's track record for updates, the 3DS may never actually be "complete".

@disneyanime91 Okay, but that is still a bunch of BS. Nintendo will go to great lengths for Monster Hunter, one game. They are completely ignoring a whole genre of games. Do you think that is right or smart from a gaming and business perspective?

ok this is odd for me. i was hopeing for a consolle version but judging how the psp gets it they just made it portable for the ds. but if the 3DS gets online why didnt they add complete multiplayer not local, same goes for psp vita, thats kind of like a psp in a way, kind of disapointing. I am sure that i wont get a 3DS soi hope they make it DS compatible(the old ones) lol.

The 2nd analog looks terrible imo if it is what I seen. << LINK REMOVED >> I have a feeling us poor beggers who bought the 3DS early will be slapped across the face when Nintendo make there new 3DS with 2 analog pads, and we will be faced with an ugly looking design if we buy the add on. I seriously hope only crap games incorporate this. Not happy.

I don't think the add-on looks bad but I don't think I will rush out to get one. FPS is pretty much the only genre that absolutely requires a right analog and I don't play FPS on my 3DS and I don't have any desire to do so. That is why when the Vita games like Resistance are releaveled I shrug and say it looks good, but I still don't want to play it on a handheld. Puzzlers, platformers, RPGs and maybe some open world adventure stuff like Zelda are the games use on my handhelds and I don't need a right analog for any of these genres.

All of this money invested into R&D and they keep getting little, simple things wrong. -Why not a solid Wii MotionPlus from day one?... cost -Why not 2 circle pads in the first place?... cost probably -How could you opt out on analog triggers for Wii U? ... cost? If you're going to have an idea on something, go in all the way. Being cheap can be damaging sometimes... C'mon Nintendo. I'm pushing for your success, but you make it hard.

The only handheld launch Nintendo did right was the original Gameboy launch back in '89. GBA's first design was bad due to the absence of a backlight. This got fixed with the SP. We all know how many improvements the DS needed, which got fixed with the Lite. Now, this ridiculous add-on for the 3DS (after just a few months)? It is obvious (for three times now) that Nintendo simply rushes a handheld to the market each time, only to release a new iteration of it each year after. It's baffling how how lazy Nintendo allows itself to be and how patronizing they treat their customers.

@alexweile May not have been any revisions of the Wii (why would there be? the Wii sucks...) but take a look at all the regular DS revamps. Since you sounded so quick to defend Nintendo and bash another conole. Altogether there were four of them: the first model, Lite, DSi, DSiXL. Now we'll go through the same thing with the 3DS, which really sucks considering I just bought mine not even a month ago and now they're already making changes to it. You mentioned the Xbox 360 revisions specifically, well they were actually out to add important updates to them for that time. There was the first console, but then they released one with HDMI support, then there was the Elite for the bigger hard drive space, and then now the slim model for wifi support and kinect support. Xbox 360 has done nothing different than what the DS went through, what the 3DS will inevitably go through, and from the looks of it the Wii-U as well so far, since it is starting out so simple/stripped.

Monster Hunter alone will justify a second analog stick and save the 3DS for now or at least in Japan.

It would be more logical for Nintendo to make a new 3DS with the second analog stick integrated. Then again this is Nintendo and they march to the sound of their own drum......

I've heard on other sites that the 2nd circle pad may be a MH3G perif. Meaning it's being made for the sole purpose of MH3G and will (hopefully) be bundled with it. If it's a seperate sale and MH3G has any other control scheme well Ill go with the other control scheme.

Monster Hunter is awesome, but "local wireless play"? Really? I realize that it would be hard to communicate on the 3DS but I would only be excited about this game if I could hunt with people online.

I don't need two analog sticks. The 3DS is a handheld, not a home console. Typically, the types of games I like to play on the road are ones that work well with the single directional pad and the touchscreen. This new add-on sounds nifty (if you're into shooters), but I'd rather see more pressing hardware issues, such as battery life, dealt with.

Ugh. 3DS doesnt need another awkward dongle. The layout is already a bit wonky. Handhelds dont really need FPS - we get enough of those on our consoles.

There you go, Sony copied Nintendo once again. Sony stole the 2nd analog stick on a handheld. People can't deny it, 3DS was released first.

I'm glad it is just an add-on. I just got my 3DS maybe a month ago... if a new one was to come out within few months with a new analog stick, and we were left to having to buy a brand new system to have it, I would have been pissed.

A built in 2nd analog is already in the works and its only natural. How long before it will come out, probably be out by E3 2012. Is there going to be some backlash, there is NOW but it won't be that way forever. I'm just as confused as everyone else as to why Nintendo decided to drop this news NOW. It hasn't been even 9 months and you already have a price cut, there is talks that your trying to implement a 3DS LESS 3DS, and now you realize that you needed a 2nd analog to begin with. The 3DS is a big girl, but not so much as I would categorize it as... "bulky" with the add-on its going to be awkward carrying it around... and the ign pic does not help.

It's the Motion Plus dongle all over again. They'll bundle it with a game that uses it so it'll be a cheap/free add on if you want that game. A new 3DS with a second built in is going to be bulkier anyway. Also, the add on looks like it might make the 3DS more ergonomic. It might be a blessing in disguise, especially if you have big hands.

@capper64 the sales didn't suffer but let me tell you why , it is because they didn't release like 3 or 4 revised versions of gameboy color so when people saw the name "gameboy advance" they immediately knew that it is a new handheld unlike DS where you see a new version every now and then and this 3DS was to people like "oh well it is another revised version , when are we gonna see a new handheld" ? you catch my drift?
