46,000 Wii Remotes sold every day in US

Nintendo parses statistics on $40 controller; 65.3 million remotes, 52.9 nunchucks sold to date in the United States.

Though the Wii has lagged behind competitors the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in last month's US hardware sales, it still remains the best-selling current-generation home console. And today, Nintendo provided new statistics having to do with the system's innovative controllers, the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk.

Nintendo has sold many, many of these.
Nintendo has sold many, many of these.

According to Nintendo, who sourced industry tracking group NPD, since the Wii launched in 2006, the company has sold over 65.3 million Wii Remotes and 52.9 million Wii Nunchuks. That equates to an average of 46,000 Wii Remotes sold per day.

Nintendo broke down the huge figure further, saying that 30.41 million Wii Remotes were included with the Wii hardware, and 12.92 million were sold with Wii Play, the best-selling game ever in the United States. Wii Remotes currently retail for $40.

In terms of color popularity with non-bundled Wii Remotes, Nintendo announced that it has sold 18.56 million white Wii Remotes, 2.44 million in black, 467,500 in pink, and 465,200 in blue.

The other half of Nintendo's innovative console is its nunchuk controller. And to date, Nintendo has sold 52.9 million nunchuks. The nunchuk currently retails for $20 and is available in both black and white. However, Nintendo did not announce the sales breakdown of both color offerings.

All statistics were sourced to the NPD group and only cover US retail sales through September.

The next Wii controller to hit the market will be the Wii Remote Plus, which will go on sale on November 7 priced at $40. That controller will be sold by itself and in the $50 FlingSmash bundle. It will also be bundled with every new Wii system, including the limited Mario anniversary bundles, beginning on November 7. The Wii Remote Plus combines the original Wii Remote with the MotionPlus add-on.

@gamedude2009, dude, are you alright? Seriously you are trashing the PS Move with lousy comments, it may not look like it to you, but everyone else it does. As for your comment to Colonel-Snake, dude, you insulted people first, so you deserve to be insulted back. Who cares which one come out first, PS Move, and the Wii remote are not the same. Both motion controllors are different in terms of gameplay. Sony is not after the casual market. This is coming from a Nintendo fanboy.

@Ex-DarkBlade: Did you even read my post? I specifically said I'm not thrashing it. @Colonel-Snake: The bottom line is, Wii came out before Move. Besides, who even cares? It's a video game, and if people can't realize that, then they don't need to stress out other people by bashing everything. I'm simply speaking my mind, and if I can't go on GS without people insulting me, then you guys are just being rude. And again... it's a game, not salvation.

It is impressive but you can't deny that Nintendo is trying to sell it's last wave before Move and Kinect have a good library of games by releasing new colors and new bundles all the time to just get the last money out of it (remember Nintendo's strategy with the gameboy). People whom are buying it now will only have only a year lifespan before the gamers realize what HD graphics is. People who have bought Wii back at launch date have gotten their investment really good out of it. Nonetheless Wii will be the best console out there for a while. People are slowly moving to HD consoles now. Thanks Nintendo for raising the bar.

$261,000,000 on Wii Remotes alone. If they're selling 46,000 of these products each day, that's $1,600,000 a day; that's just insane.

I decided to do a little Facebook poll, only 2 people answered but then again I only have 23 friends on there lol. Turns out that they are still using their Wii's. The problem is that they aren't buying anything new! Guitar Hero seems to be the most popular play, followed by bowling. My 2 other mates just bought Just Dance 2 though.... that's about it. I bought Red Steel 2 though and I do plan on picking up No More Heroes 2, followed by Goldeneye, The Conduit 2, Donkey Kong, Other M, Epic Yarn, Epic Micky, Sin and Punishment 2 and Trauma Team. I've gone right off Nintendo's first party stuff though (second party stuff is ok though).

And how many are collecting dust since the casual players got tired of Wii Bowling? The Wii may sell a lot of hardware, but not that many games.

I find that Nintendo's timing of the release of this information to be quite peculiar. To be more specific, it comes at a time when Microsoft and Sony are trying hard to market their own respective motion controls products. Perhaps Nintendo is making a defensive stance of some sort?

There are some good reasons for the astonishingly high sales of Wii Remotes here in this article, but somehow I can't help but picture clumsy dudes accidentally flinging Remotes out windows and losing them to damage or simply getting them stolen after that. :D

@gamedude2009 It's really not as accurate as some people say. I've got a few friends that own the move, and all of them have troubles with getting it to read the motions properly. It's about the same as the Wiimote without motion+

@ BirgitteSilver Sony released the Move to copy the Wii's success. Hence, Move is an attempt to copy. Simple.

"I can't believe people are trying to say Move is not a copy of the Wiimote." Sony demoed the same tech in 2004, before the Wii-mote was ever even thought of. The only reason they didn't release it at the time is it was WAY too inaccurate in Sony's estimation. People who believe the Move ripped off the Wii-mote are completely uninformed. It may have been released because of the Wii-mote's success, but it's not a ripoff of it.

Good to hear. Nintendo is a great company, I've never had any beef with them. They're also pretty much the main innovators of the game industry at the moment, I look forward to see where they'll take gaming in the future.

@Ex-DarkBlade Barely Ever. I tend to argue with people when we have different points of views about things. I really don't wanna waste my time arguing with fanboys for 2 reasons. 1. They are stupid and 2. They can't be reasoned with and they believe their was of thinking is the right way so its a waste of time.
