We got a whole lot of new information in the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-focused Nintendo Direct presentation. Among the announcements was that when the game launches on December 7, it will be available in a bundle called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Limited Edition.

This version comes with the game itself, plus a Smash-branded GameCube controller and a USB adapter that lets players connect up to four GameCube controllers to their Switch. So far this bundle has only been announced for Europe, though it may come to the US as well. You can pre-order it here for £90.

Now Playing: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: All The News From The Nintendo Direct - GS News Update

A GameCube controller has been the preferred input for pro-level and diehard Smash Bros. players ever since Super Smash Bros. Melee came out for GameCube in 2001. Each main Nintendo console since then has supported the controller, as have all non-handheld installments of the Smash Bros. series.

No Caption Provided

The Limited Edition of the game comes in a big, wide box adorned with an image of dozens of fighters from the Smash Ultimate roster. As yet, no pricing information has been revealed.

Nintendo will also sell standalone Smash-themed GameCube controllers. You can pre-order one them now from Amazon for $30 each. If you're not planning to get the Limited Edition, make sure you also pre-order an adapter.

We got lots of other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announcements today as well, including the additions of Simon and Richter Belmont, King K. Rool, and Dark Samus as playable characters. It will also feature a Monster Hunter boss, stages that transform mid-match, and a soundtrack with over 800 songs.

For those asking "why". Until now the GameCube controller was the best official controller Nintendo had to offer across any of their consoles. The other options were expensive and didnt make any sense (Wii you had to attach the classic remote to your wiimote, Wii U never sold, and Nintendo finally got a clue when they built the Pro remotes for Switch.). The switch is actually the first time they have been able to muster a decent controller, too bad it doesnt come with the console by default. At least its decently priced.

@genji_shimada: why not just make a new controller... Microsoft does it all the time.

Seems a bit excessive to buy controllers to play one game with. Not worth, in my opinion.

@Daveof89: People aren't rational about GameCube controllers, Smash, or really even the Switch in general. : p

@Daveof89: that's only if you're ignorant enough to acknowledge the fact that Nintendo already confirmed the controller is compatible with other games like MK8. But then again, people have been paying over 300$ for a throttle and a flight sim controller or a racing wheels + pedal + shifter just for one game so how is it anymore excessive than what people have already been doing for over 2 decades? Moreover, this controller is only 30$; only 90% cheaper than those expensive racing wheel/flight sim controller and it's totally optional. Pro controller will do the exact same job for everyone who isn't a pro smash player (in essence, more than 99.99% of the Smash crowd won't see a difference playing with Pro rather than gamecube controller).

@heqteur: Forgive me for being an ignorant adult with not enough time to find every small factoid released by every company.

Those other controllers are typically compatible with more than one game, just one genre. Even so, you say it as if I am a hypocrite who buys such controllers. I don’t. I don’t spend enough time on any one genre to justify spending a ton of money to enhance the experience.

has nintendo got a warehouse somewhere out there full of old gamecube controller stock and now they have the perfect way to re brand them back into circulation

i only ask because they all seem wired in the pictures iv seen and no talk of them wireless unless in this day and age i should already presume they are wireless

(note on these and those other limited edition also pictured wired)

@Flyin3lvl: You also have to keep input lag in mind, these are primarily targeted at competitive smash players. Competitive fighting game players on the whole prefer wired controllers as a means of reducing input lag.

@Flyin3lvl: probably. But it's also easier and cheaper to start manufacturing again the same product than asking to build a newer model which house the exact same features as the original design but with the addition of a wireless option.

@heqteur: more then likely the latter , same design cheap to produce in mass

i think i read some comment ages ago stating they should have updated the wave bird, i guess re design this particular controller for wireless would be costly in the long run and play it safe

It was okay, and I was able to finish both Pikmin and both Zeldas (ports of Ocarina and Mask) on it, but I don't get the love for that controller.

@Pyrosa: I don't understand why anybody would ever want to use an GameCube controller if they didn't have to either.

@Mogan: in essence, what you're saying is you don't understand personal preferences. This is the one reason why we have tons of different controller design today and why this won't change.
