A Lord Of The Rings TV Series Is Potentially Coming To Amazon

Warner Bros. and the Tolkien estate are reportedly talking to Amazon about a new series based on the fantasy franchise.

A TV series based on the epic fantasy franchise The Lord of the Rings is in the works, though it sounds like very early days and it may never happen. According to Variety, Warner Bros. TV and J.R.R. Tolkien's estate are talking to Amazon about developing a series based on the novels. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is reportedly actively involved personally in the discussions. Importantly, Variety points out the rumored talks are only in the "very early stages" and no agreement has been reached as of yet.

According to Variety, WB and the estate are speaking to other, unnamed platforms for the new Lord of the Rings show, with Amazon said to be the frontrunner at this stage. WB and Amazon had no comment when approached by Variety.

Variety points out that it is a rarity for Bezos to be personally involved in negotiations regarding Amazon Studios projects. He might be doing so due to the recent turnover at Amazon Studios. Roy Price was the Amazon Studios president before leaving the company recently amid sexual harassment claims. Head of scripted programming Joe Lewis and head of unscripted programming Conrad Riggs also left Amazon recently.

Some of Amazon Studios projects include the critically acclaimed shows Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, and The Man in the High Castle.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the biggest entertainment properties on the planet, so it is no surprise at all to learn it may continue with a TV series. There are no details at all as of yet regarding what part of the Lord of the Rings story the show might cover or who would star in it. Whatever the case, it is an exciting idea for Lord of the Rings fans.

The bastardisation continues...

Let me guess, the series will address equality issues and gender identity?

All I know is that the Tolkien estate is holding back any more LOTR movies from being made.

@ThePlantain: Actually i think that first movie was very good it's the second and third that was atroucious if they cut all that bulshit they put and made 2 movies instead of 3 it could be overall nice set but NOOOOO we need to milk it and stretch it as loooong as possible to make $ . I think the fact that hobbit is shorter then fellowship (book) yet gets the same amount of movies as entire LOTR is riddiculous if we go that way then we should have 9 LOTR movies :D

@idakooz: There are literally no more lord of the rings movies to be made unless they made what happened after the LOTR but that would be kinda boring.

@gamingdevil800: They could use sirmallion or unfinished tales i guess or they could go like make the first war against sauron with isildur and the like i mean. But it would just not work i think i doubt they could make storyline on par with tolkien just look at the crap they put into hobbit 2/3 :D

There are two different Tolkien-based tabletop role-playing games currently put out by Cubicle 7, one using their unique rules system and one using the current D&D rules system. Their license allows them to use material from The Hobbit and the the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but none of the other books. Basically the same license as the movies had. They set the adventures for the games in the roughly 70-year time period that passes between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring. Since that seems to be the extent that any of the licenses seem to cover, I would bet that any TV series set in Middle Earth would have the same limitations and may be set during the same time frame as the game. There is a lot that could be done in those 70 years that would not invalidate any of the plots from LotR.

I could see this being Silmarillion. In fact, I think it's the only way Silmarillion could be done. If it's anything that's already been covered, i.e the Hobbit or the trilogy, I say leave it alone. Like them or hate them for the story changes, no one can deny the sheer scope of what was put on screen. Anything else would look cheap by comparison.

@mandywilliams: The problem with the Silmarillion is that it's very dry. Most of it is just lore, as opposed to actual stories you could film/act-out.

@tom_cat_01: Agreed. It spans an enormous time period which would make it hard to tell a focused story like the Hobbit and LOTR.

Besides the original Jackson trilogy, nothing worthwhile has been done with the Legendarium IP for mass consumption. On top of that, it's too early. Let's wait for another fifty years, then we see where we're at when these things hit the public domain. Whatever happens, it would be wise to stay the heck away from them Silmarils!

@MJ12-Conspiracy: I'm one of those that don't really mind a new addition to an iconic franchise simply for nostalgia reasons but I hold LOTR so dear that I'm afraid that this is won't do it justice or worse even attempt to milk it.

Well, if it's done good and goes well for the source material, then I'll be good for watching it.
