A Minecraft Movie Sequel Could Happen With This Main Character, Director Says
"It seems like there's already talk about it happening, so I'm super excited."
A Minecraft Movie opened in theaters this past weekend and made more than $300 million worldwide, exceeding expectations and even outperforming The Super Mario Bros. Movie in some ways. Hollywood loves sequels, and now the first word on a potential A Minecraft Movie 2 has emerged.
Director Jared Hess told Deadline that making a sequel would be "so much fun," adding that the world of Minecraft is "expansive" and leaves open plenty of possibilities for more stories.
"There were so many things that we didn't tap into that we wanted to," he said. "I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there's already talk about it happening, so I'm super excited. It'll be so much fun to go back into the world. The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it."

If a sequel is made, it could focus on the character Alex, who was teased at the end of the film. Alex would be joined by Jack Black's character, Steve, in a potential sequel, Hess said.
Hess added that Black is the "most genuine artist ever," and he described him as one of the "hardest workers" and one of the "most gracious and compassionate" actors out there.
"Every single person on the crew, he knew all of their names. And there's hundreds of people. His presence on set just elevates everybody; he cares so deeply about people and his passion for life and people is so sincere and real, it comes through in everything that he does," Hess said.
Hess also sung the praises of Jason Momoa, who played Garrett in A Minecraft Movie. Hess said Momoa is "larger than life" and "so stinkin' funny." Describing his partnership with Black in A Minecraft Movie, Hess said, "We just thought it would be so funny if these guys were trying to one-up each other and outdo each other, the whole movie, and finally come together in this epic romance, and people are really having a fun time with it."
