A New Overwatch Character Is Coming, More Clues Found

Changes to the arrivals board on the Numbani map lend credence to Efi theories.

In a blog post released on Tuesday, Blizzard shared some lore about a character from the Overwatch universe who may or may not be the new playable character being added to the game.

Toward the end of the blog post, styled as a fictional Atlas News interview with young scientist Efi Oladele, she is heard to say "my parents are taking me on a trip to celebrate! It'll be my first time flying, so I can't wait."

This led players to take a closer look at the arrivals board present in one of the spawn locations on the game's Numbani map, the city Efi apparently hails from.

According to a report over at PVP Live, a number of changes are present on the board since the Efi blog post was released.

Updated Numbani arrivals board, PVP Live.
Updated Numbani arrivals board, PVP Live.
  • The flight from Moscow has been Cancelled.
  • The Delayed flight from Paris is now On Time.
  • The Delayed Tokyo flight has been changed to Hanamura and is now On Time.
  • London's 4:00 AM flight has been changed to Singapore.
  • Mexico City has been changed to Dorado.
  • The New York flight is no longer Delayed.
  • Cairo has been changed to Taipei
  • Los Angeles has changed to Sydney.
  • London's 6:30 AM Delayed flight has been removed and changed to an On Time flight from King's Row.

But what do these changes mean? It's unclear at this stage. The arrivals board is in Numbani--Efi's home--meaning these flights are incoming to the city. The fact that Efi refers to taking a flight somewhere--her first flight--means that the changes on the board have no bearing on her specific plane. Or does it? Perhaps we're to learn that a character based in one of the incoming locations has flown to Numbani? Will something happen to Efi's flight? Is Blizzard really going to make an 11-year-old a playable character in a first-person-shooter?

What is that mysterious four-legged tank?
What is that mysterious four-legged tank?

One of the leading theories is that the many references to Efi's proficiency with robotics will ultimately result in the four-legged spider tank--featured in the background of Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan's DICE summit--becoming the next playable character.

Share your theories for who--or what--the next Overwatch character might be in the comments!

In other Overwatch news, Kaplan also revealed during his DICE summit that the Dorado map was accidently based on the wrong country, a brace of new Funko Pop figures are coming in April, and Overwatch developer and publisher Activision Blizzard came in at No. 3 on Fortune's Worlds Most Admired Companies for 2017.

This is definitely dated concept art, so I'm thinking the spider tank is probably something we're going to get; If any of the recent teases are to have merit, imma guess that Efi is probably manually controlling the tank. Considering abilitities, it's interesting to see the smaller spider bots, considering Widowmaker already has one of her own. And the beam looks awfully similar to Zarya's. Either way, I'm excited to see what's next--I've definitely enjoyed both Ana and Sombra immensely.

I can't wait to play then New SJW character who fights with a megaphone and throws anti-conservative protest signs at the players.

@rob909e: Or Steve Bannon dressed as Hitler. Could have powers like shout "Fake News!", "I hate all races other than white!" and such. Could even give him an emoticon of him hugging a Vladimir Putin doll.

A mechanized spider tank would be fun to play, provided it could scale walls as normal movement and have a web entanglement ability to slow or immobilize enemy units.

I wanted doomfist :(

but any new free character is ok.

But this would also mean that they've made all of dlc characters female....

@biggamerdude: I think there were rumours of Doomfist being the next hero after this one? Either way he'll definitely come out, just a matter of waiting.

It's pretty probable that she's going to be a new hero, or even an important NPC in a potential future mission/quest.

Having said that, I doubt she has anything to do with the robot thing. It's got a different colour palette and you can see a woman controlling it in the middle. The woman has a different silhouette and is pretty obviously an adult, so she's too different to be the 11-yr-old girl. Buuuut, since the girl is a scientist, they may be linked in some way? A bit of a stretch tbh.

At any rate, I'd say the girl is an upcoming hero, while the spider-robot-woman is a different potential hero who probably works with Talon. (because she's purple lol)

@catplace: So...the tank couldn't be controlled by the little girl?

@Dragon_Nexus: Like I said; in the image it looks like it's being controlled by an adult woman, who also has a different colour palette from Efi.

If anything, I think Efi is going to build and/or remotely control some kind of robot (possibly a tank quadruped called Anchora if the leaks are correct). As I doubt Blizzard would want a killable child character in their game.

Maybe the woman in the tank pictured is also a robot, and is built by Efi, but right now we don't know enough to make any connection without it feeling like a stretch.

The world is definitely inspired by anime, so a kid character would definitely be a fit.

Whacky thought: I wonder if the arrival board is actually some sneaky way of reporting on the status of new characters? So if something says "Delayed" than whatever character that city or region represents has hit a snag, or if we see "On Time" or "Arrival" it could mean the character in question will arrive as expected. If a new city or region appears...it could mean a brand new concept is in the works.

I know. It could just be atmosphere, but Bungie sort of did the same thing in Halo 3 by hiding developer messages reporting on future DLC progress.
