Action trio lands on Wii VC

Original NES Castlevania whips its way to downloadable-game service alongside the SNES Legend of the Mystical Ninja, TG-16 Shockman.

Wii Classic Controllers are in for a workout this week, as a trio of mettle-testing action games are arriving on the system's downloadable game service. The original Nintendo Entertainment System's Castlevania headlines today's new releases, and it's joined by the early Super Nintendo action adventure Legend of the Mystical Ninja and the TurboGrafx-16 side-scrolling cyborg shooter Shockman.

Originally released in 1987, Castlevania started Konami's long-running series in a straightforward fashion. As Simon Belmont, players have to fight their way through Dracula's castle one stage at a time until the climactic showdown with the dreaded vampire lord. The whip is Simon's weapon of choice, although items like holy water, boomerangs, and a watch that stops time can assist him in eliminating the zombies, skeletons, and flying medusa heads in his way. Castlevania is available for 600 Wii points ($6).

For fans of more lighthearted fare, there's Legend of the Mystical Ninja. One of the earliest third-party games on the Super Nintendo, Legend of the Mystical Ninja was the first in Konami's Goemon series of colorful ninja games to be localized for North American audiences. The game combined action and adventure elements in gameplay encompassing traditional side-scrolling action with three-quarters overhead-view segments. Players could work together as Kid Ying and Dr. Yang to fight through 10 stages with such devastating weapons as party favors, pipes, yo-yos, and money. Legend of the Mystical Ninja is available for 800 Wii points ($8).

Gamers looking for a different style of two-player cooperative action games can check out Hudson's 1991 side-scroller Shockman. The game is actually the second in the series, but like Goemon, only the first to garner a domestic release. Players take control of Arnold and Sonya, a pair of Shockmen cyborgs, and battle through eight stages of platforming and side-scrolling shoot-'em-up action. Shockman is available for 600 Wii points ($6).

TheGreatTK, wot internet connection are u using it only takes me about 30 seconds to download snes games and just over 1 min for N64. it just sounds like you dont like nintendo and are trying to put people off buying VC games, nobody is forcing u to buy then so stop moaning. if u can get them free and play them on your pc, why the heck are u complaining anyway, just sit infront off your pc and wait for the police to arrest you for playing illegal games.

To those that complain about playing games on PC.. Original controls? Ok, i can buy an adaptor box that will let me connect my NES,SNES,N64, AND PSX controllers to my PC for about the price of this game. IMHO, the adaptor has more value. Illegality? Perhaps. But then again, charging six bucks for something i can have for 1 or 2 (original cartridge, 'natch), or even free if we download the rom (and i might add, downloading the rom is easier and quicker than mucking around with the VC download service), is right out highway robbery. The RIGHT thing to do would be: 1. NES is an easy system to emulate, so there's absolutely no reason to be releasing 5 games a week, tops. Especially considering each game is LESS than one megabyte! Value packs FTW 2. LOWER THE PRICES! Straight ports of something that can be had for free, easier, elsewhere, are NOT worth six dollars each! 3. And let's speed up the wii shop while we're at it. Tell me why it takes over 10 minutes to download a SNES game (at 8 bucks.. *groan*) that can't possibly be much bigger than 1-2 meg? On CABLE?

Admittedly, I burned myself out on Castlevania from playing SOTN on 360 for weeks straight, but any problems I've had with the Big N have been more or less washed away by Legend Of The Mystical Ninja being made available.

So they finally give me some Mystical Ninja, but I wanted the one for the N64. I'll wait to purchase until I can get that game.

Shockman doesn't look bad for a Mega Man type game. I think I'll get it and Ganbare Goemon....maybe Punch-Out!, but I already own it for my NES...and Super Mario RPG for my SNES...I feel sorry for those of you that have to wait for it :)

Mystical Ninja for the N64 is one of my favourite games of all time. I'm going to have to try the SNES adventure as soon as I can.

"$5 is too much? $5 is cheap in a world where a latte costs that much." All too true. People don't **** about spending $5 on something they'll piss out within 2 hours but they complain about this. Crap is crap but the good games are in most cases worth the price.

dn3datomiced AngelCage, you're too good to buy a $6 dollar game that's easily worth the money? For shame... .-.-.-.-.-.-.-..-.-.-.-.-.--.-.-.-.--.-.-.-.-.--.-.- Shame? Where? Don't be a fanboy. Castlevania WAS a great game in it's days (i can remember it) but for now, a perfect port, without any kind of work (nothing more than make the rom and put it in the VC channel) $5 - $6???? It's too much, especially is you compare the prices with some XBLA prices, revamped-reworked old games for $5. DLC on xbox live for Guitar hero 2 for a couple of songs it costs 800 MP

They also rewrite the manual and supposedly test the roms. I say supposedly because I have had numerous Genesis titles lock on me if I use the classic controller instead of the Gamecube controller.

Legend of Mystical Ninja was great, but any time I tried for real I lived in constant fear of their saving method. VC does bypass that right? If so, it's a whole new ball game :) :)
