Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

Bit late, are they only just realising this??? its doesnt need a tweaked engine, it needs an entirely new one.

Though graphics certainly are not the biggest issue with cod games.

btw not a hater, i just think for one of the best selling game series in history they are not giving us value for money.

@GamerLegend10 "i just think for one of the best selling game series in history they are not giving us value for money."

Only if you define value as the lighting system in a game engine rather than the contents of the product being sold... which is odd, unless you're a developer buying a game engine.

@Senor_Kami lol, i agree, its so stupid that they think a few tweaks to the lighting is enough effort and improvement to make...and then try to convince us that they have worked hard to vastly improve things...BS.

I love how Call of Duty articles are getting the biggest number of comments. Shows how popular the franchise still is. Everyone seems to bother to drop a comment whether they hate the game or love it.Although haters seem to comment more. Probably because they believe their keyboard usage will change things they don't like or they're in dire need of solace without knowing it themselves. Because things seem to have gone from hating Call of Duty to being just butthurt about Call of Duty.

@TheDarkSpot Or maybe some of us cringe at why gamers like you will buy the next 20 sequels and be all "ZOMG!!!!!!! THIS TIME THEY GOT UH...DIFFERENT GREANDES!$!! YESSSSSSSSSSS!". I love the industry, and love gaming, but since playing on the days of a Commodore 64, some of us are just so sick of seeing the next iterations of COD and BF year after year after year. The reason it's a best selling franchise is because a bunch of screaming, crying 12 year olds nag their clueless parents into buying it, or the college frat boy weekend gamer. Also, the very nature of gaming, articles, etc is that people will always clash on what's a good game, so I'm aware people disagree with me. Sorry this isn't a forum where everyone is all stroking each other off of how cool they are for wanting this. Learn why some people disagree and either learn from it or disregard it.

@xDeadP00lx Well, I buy the games because I enjoy them. They're not bad games at all. At least they manage to put out quality every year. And unlike many, I buy them for every mode. Hell, I used to buy them for the campaign only. Back when I played offline. It's also a best-selling franchise because they don't come out with a buggy mess like many others do.I don't really care about the problems you hardcore gamers have. Especially the "old days". The new generation came like Alexander the Great and you're just going to have to accept it or go poof. I like the games and Activision will get my money. I've loved the games since the first one.But haters do seem to have gone from hating to just being butthurt. They keep whining about the game and their comments keep getting more pathetic and desperate. I remember when battles were held in the comments sections as if they were console wars. But now, the haters have become so pathetic that most of the people who love the games don't even waste time on them anymore.

@xDeadP00lx Well, I think COD's getting good reviews because while not innovative enough, as some say, the games are stable and not buggy. The games are still fun to play, the multiplayer is addicting in a really good way, the stories are pretty interesting and co-op is a lot better than, say BF3's in my opinion. The first Call of Duty that introduced me to the series was the very first one. And I love every single one of them. MW2 is still my most favorite(could be one of the later ones instead but MW2 was the first one that really got in my head and for that, I won't forget it). The crazy story blew me away. It's sad that Jason West, Vince Zampella and Hans Zimmer weren't around for MW3. So they release a game every year. Why not have a game that does this? It's not like it's the only game in the world. Don't like it, don't buy it. Many other games that come up with new and interesting stuff are getting bad reviews because they're often messed up in many ways. And of course all console games are made on "your" PC's. I thank your PC's.

@TheDarkSpot Well a few things here. Quality, is subjective, especially to us "older gamers who need to go poof". What I even meant by that line was, I've seen how gaming has evolved. I"m only 30, so I'm not 60 or anything, but it's come a long way since Apple IIGS, Commodore 64, and Atari. Therefore with my "resume" if you will, is I think I have a good idea of quality since I've played hundreds of games on most consoles and PC's. I've even bought some of the newer COD's (nothing past MW1....), and I even played the OLD COD'S NO ONE REMEMBERS about WWII on PC when they were good/unique. So I think for me to comment, is quite valid. These articles, and forums, are not for everyone to agree. I wasn't trolling in simple terms like "it sux lulz!!". I just vehemently disagreed with Activision, their snub at gamers, and their lame-brain, stale ass gameplay for COD, and the zombies who line up to buy them year after year. They perpetuate this cash cow being milked for the annual issue of COD. THAT'S what perpetuates mediocrity and lack of creativity from these companies. So by all means, by this game, love it, defend it. I have seen gaming evovle, and I'm not going "poof"! I love what it's become, how mainstream it is (hey, we're not all virgin dorks with glasses anymore like 80's jokes!), and I love where it's going....until it becomes like stale Hollywood like COD. When a frat boy or stupid celebrity drops the name "COD" because they feel like an elite gamer or they're cool, you know it bad. Also, I will never get "butthurt" over a game, or participate in "console wars". All of your console games are made on "my" PC's, kid :)

@TheDarkSpot So, can anyone actually elaborate on the "ground breaking", "award winning" game play? You run around and shoot. You can't blow up buildings or get in vehicles. You throw grenades. I would think graphics would be paramount with something like this. Also, as I'm sure you've gathered by now TheDarkSpot, I'm not a huge fan of FPS, but if I had to play I'd play the BF franchise. So much more you can do in terms of "gameplay". Also, why do graphics and gameplay have to be mutually exclusive? They should have done this long ago.

um vaultboy-101 30fps shrinks everything down, casts anything beyond a few yards into shadow and frankly at 1080p looks grainy. at 60 hell 40 or 50 the size and lighting across a map does not change. if it's six feet tall it's six feet tall, and you can see the dust on shoes through a scope and the expression on a face as well at 400 yards. so while games like bf3 have Superior sound due to the dolby system and attention to such detail, it is hard to adjust to the slower frame rate.

@indicaX @dcrabiddog Punctuation is incorrect, and no capital letters. Also, I am a college graduate with I believe does technically make me "educated". Not a knock on high school grads, but I technically fit the bill, so thanks for playing. Also, my comment was in context with what the idiot OP was saying. Lastly, how am I the "worst cancer to plague the gaming industry"? That's awfully sinister and giving me way too much power! I work in finance buddy, and I only buy games, therefore I have no control on the industry or COD shite. ..........or do I? Muhahahahhaahhaha!

@dcrabiddog LOL you crack me up. FPS is just frames per second. It is the number of frames being displayed per second. Higher fps=smoother gameplay, low fps=choppyness. None of what you stated has anything to do with fps.

@dcrabiddog ? Lowering framerate doesn't cause any of the issues you've brought up. It certainly doesn't make objects larger or smaller on the screen or add extra details to textures.

I'd prefer a game to run at 30fps if it meant the visual quality could be higher, it's a worthy trade off.

Really? They couldn't be bothered to use a different engine? They wouldn't have even had to make a new one from scratch, just use something newer like Unreal Engine 3. You can only tweak the same thing so many times.

wow... raichou i could not agree anymore... modern warfare 2007 was a great shooter.. then! Now is the same.. just feels like an old catcher's mitt..... Not to say these stories or plots are are are soooo lame.... i can't explain it.. it is all eye-orgasm....

Like compare Original Golden Eye for it's time, Ninja Gaiden and How hard the game was. Bosses.. Lives.. ect.. then the tournament began.

Like i want precise gaming vs hundreds of people with great physics and as realistic as humanly possible.. graphics and bs no.. Story and Precision yes..

Halo is sooooo simple yet so masterful.. hmmm.

kill streaks are pretty toddler! just saying...

Grow up Call of Duty the first Medal of Honor was the best war game ever!!!! ..

I love it how they always mention their game running at 60 fps when BF3 came out and 60fps when people complained about graphics and now it is their excuse for not changing the graphics at all. I thought the trailer graphics looked worse than the original Black Ops and that is saying something. And the game has never run at 60fps for me. There are often framerate drops and half rendered objects all over the place.

Enhancements? It looks like the same engine to me. And wat, all this to maintain 60fps? Geez what a lame excuse. Its like saying "Oh we're going to keep using the Genie Engine (AOE2) for RTS games because it keeps the fps at 100 fps so it all runs smooth". Ridiculous. As a former CoD fan since the original CoD in 2003 who's stopped playing after WAW (and a little run at Black Ops), I am frankly appalled at the shape of the franchise these days (nothing more than a cheap money-grabbing recycled shooter for 16 yo's who dont know better). RIP CoD.

Really don't get all the fuss about this one. What were you expecting? Many people point out that it's the same game every year. Considering this it's quite weird that it still sells out every game. The fan base is the one thing Activision relies on and they won't disappoint. The game would need a really good campaign an overhaul of the engine, or just use another engine, some gameplay changes and well limiting perks in the multiplayer. In CoD4 you had 3 killstreak rewards a few perks and that's it. The killsteaks and perks never gave you a huge advantage over your opponents. In MW2 there were perks which overpowered you not to mention killstreaks. One map if you got spawn trapped you were stuck there until the chopper went away :)). Time for a smoke :)) and than get back to the game. So it's very nice that they want to keep it 60FPS. It would also be time for new consoles and for me to buy some new hardware for my PC. The advancements made to GPU and CPU performance is just amazing and if Sony and Microsoft decide to bring out the new consoles soon we'll be seeing graphics upgrades for every franchise.

Activision won't overhaul the graphics and it's the end of this story. Maybe if their sales go way down with BO2. Just maybe they'll make some changes.

I'm sticking to BF3 at the moment and waiting on Max Payne 3 and Ghost Recon.

I think its funny that people always bag on Call of duty and yet they will bye and there only excuse will be I just wanted to see how much it sucked lol. Or play zombies ;)

But I must admit I liked the first black ops way more than MW so I will have to wait and see I mean we all knew it was a matter of time before they went futuristic I was hoping more like a star trek kind of future hahah.
