Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

How about making a game that has some balance. Every game since COD4 has removed balance and added perks that help the bad kids.

Even Uncharted Golden Abyss looked better than this overpriced expansion pack.

Graphics wise COD died after World at War released.

Yeah, we don't a single player campaign that's actually worth a squirt of piss and takes longer to beat than taking an actual piss, It's the graphics that need improvement. Yes, that's what we want the most!

Mmmmm, I'm sure most asked for a brand new engine, not another upgrade to it. How much of a difference does he think it will be? How dumb does he think we are?

COD has had outdated graphics since MW2 because they keep using the same engine. Nobody is buying B.S. anymore, we know how old that engine is. Spend some damn money and overhaul everything.

@BestJinjo I know, and I was still in high school when Q3 came out (graduated 2001) It's no wonder COD is so profitable when they never have to worry about creating new content.

The problem is that Infinity Ward created the game engine. Activision just hands over the game engine to devs like Treyarch to pump out another shitty game.

Don't tell me. I bet they'll do here just as they did with the past COD games when they compared MW1 with MW2: look at the back of the AK47! In MW1 the weapon's brand isn't carved on it but don't worry we enhanced the engine in MW2 and put one on the AK47 and all the other weapons. Hurray!!! A major "visual advancement"... well at least for Activsion.

As for "lighting advancements," well, last time I saw EA do this on BF Play4Free or Pay2Win, whatchamacallit, without changing the engine or even enhancing it.

Anyway just focus on the cool things u said earlier about the branching story line, the villain's background and all cuz I'm not expecting anything else from u

Really tired of hearing people cry about COD. Don't like it then don't play it. Think you can design a better game series then do it. Might only have 10 million buy black ops 2... Oh well going to miss the rest of you...go complain about something else.

I don't hate COD, just the opposite and I played every single one of them. I just want to be able to play games that push my $8000+ rig to its limits. I'm really tired of playing same old games that keep getting shorter with every new release (and still costs $60.) Therefore, I agree with all those people who aren't satisfied anymore with COD. It's not only their right to complain and criticize, but on the contrary, it's the right thing to do. Nobody should ever be satisfied with today's achievements and instead pushed for more and better to fuel the progress. Otherwise we would still be playing Pong.

There might be a good reason for your remarks, though. You might just be protecting your aging console and are afraid that any significant improvements to the game might leave you in the dust crying hopelessly for help. But wait, there is hope! You can continue playing old versions of COD that you're so satisfied with.

I didn't mean to brag, I just wanted to make a point that today's standards are very high with their growth rate approaching more and more geometrical growth. But anyway here what I got: Asus Rampage IV Extreme X79, i7 Extreme Edition 3960X, 32GB RAM, couple of EVGA's GTX 680 Hydro Coopers, single EVGA GTX 560 for PhysX, couple of liquid cooling loops, two RAID 0 SSDs, another RAID 0 high capacity 7200rpm 6GB/s, bunch of fancy control panels, plus other stuff.

I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won. I admit that I'm often... vexed at the behavior of my own people. Yeah... "vexed" is a good word. You do what you can to help gamers, and they make you wonder why you even bother. But they're our people, and we gotta love 'em regardless. One thing for sure, though: can't blame this one on the industry.... what am I sayin'? 'Course I can!

You can't achieve 60 FPS and get anything looking good on the Xbox 360 or PS3...it just can't happen. BF3 is probably one of the best-looking games out there right now and it can barely get 30 FPS on the 360.

Good point, but what can you expect? Both consoles are over 7 years old and in this world that means generations. As long as game makers target them we won't see much improvements.

@Blitzkrieg129 I would argue that Rage looked pretty great aside from the low res textures. And it was a much more steady 60 fps than COD which is usually running closer to 55 of 360 and 50 on PS3.

A modified version? What now is goining to be a 3.164378 version Trololol?

And later a 3.1643789513264556775497865442312345656761 FOR the next gen?

And the worse is that they'l probably think that we think is a new engine!!!!

Upgrades are always welcome, but as long as they keep the gameplay fast paced, easy to play and fluid, it's fine. And honestly, the graphics look alright the way they are, but first things first ,and further balancing the multiplayer should take priority.

Standard PR response. COD fans are the best set of fans a franchise can have. Proven fact. They(COD Devs) don't need a new engine, It's irrelevant to the outcome. It's been proven time and time again...

It's great they picked up on this, I mean gamers have been so suttle about it and all.

Will they listen to said gamers? Please.

Only time will tell but my guess is on a modified version of the current engine. Glitter on poo is still, unfortuantly, poo. Excuse the crude metephor but that seems to have become the case for CoD which is a shame as the series used to stand out from the crowd for the right reasons (decent WW2 games then a risky leap into a modern setting with a engaging story. Now they stick with that).

So they are just modifying the Black Ops engine, which is basically a modified Modern Warfare engine, which at it heart is a Quake 3 engine that the original Infinity Ward heavily modified. When will Treyarch actually stand on their own as a developer and build a game from a modern engine or design one on their own. Until then they I will only view them as talented modders instead of a true game developer.
