Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

if they made the COD games for the PC first(like they use to), instead of the consoles, there wouldnt be a problem with better graphics.I have an nvidea GTX 570 graphic card and there are no games out there that even challenges this card.Only the Crysis and STALKER games really make this card work(especially crysis1 and warhead, but these games are over 5 yrs old)Now nvidea has a new graphic card series(GTX 6) which has tremendous graphic power and it needs games in order to give reason for its existence!Maybe it needs Black Ops II.

Is it wrong of me to laugh that they're focusing on improving the graphics rather than the gameplay?

@KBABZ No, it makes you an informed, smart gamer. Something which the COD franchise drastically lacks.

It's good to hear that the new COD game will actually improve on graphics for once. MW3 looked like a cartoon and exactly the same as MW2. With the Frostbite 2 engine out, they definately have to improve.

TOO LATE! I am done with COD. Bought every single one EVER made. regretted buying Black Ops 1. REALLY regretted MW3. I will not waste my money a 3rd time. and the sad thing is I cant even rely on the reviews since two of the worst game I have ever played. Black ops and MW3 got 9 or higher.

Yeah I'd prefer some dip in graphical quality for a consistent 60 FPS. No complaints on that front.

Consoles are already being pushed to their maximum, I don't see how any developer can make better looking games without going PC and making games generations ahead of consoles graphically.

They're only doing it because they have no choice. Obviously the sales aren't the amount they wanted so they do the logical thing. I still don't want any more CoD's though, lol. Never again.

I'm sure they're aware of every complaint gamers have. The question is whether they give a crap or not (I tend to think "not").

right id love for a trifecta campaign.. encluding the first half and second for the Bl/\CKOPs campaigns to tie the story in. and how about a zombie campaign.. its all ready loony toony online with moon the space walk.. you can do anything you want in that direction but even keep it possibly real. sliding into cover would be cool.. dry firing over cover would be cool. a more real ambiance to the game. Character building.. so we can relate.. or unrelate.. or feel what they are feeling.. to this day.. Medal Of Honors new release for ps3 had the best campaign.. even though it wasnt very long with actual people and events.. right history with this one trey arch make us remember black ops 2.. the only intruging video ive seen about it is the documentary http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJHZuCB7p6s&feature=g-vrec

I'm fine with the visuals I've seen so far. If anything, I'm happy to here that major developers are caring less about graphics so they can devote more to the actual game. And Black Ops looked fine to me, I'm sure this will be the same.

You have how much money??? and you cant Set up a new engine.. for a whole new call of duty look... why would you disgrace the franchise and just shave the top off the money pile.. quality put in is quality returned.. and for quantity to reign the quality of the quantity must be there. so give us what we want.. actually get on the streets.. use that company money bring a call of duty van around and ask us what we didnt like what we would liek to improve... have polls people interaction.. or you just too busy at the eyes wide shut party on the 60th floor???

It's amazing how so many people love to play a game that is so close to reality.

Why be a normal soldier when you could fly, fight aliens or monsters, explore unique worlds, have super-powers, cast spells, traverse dimensions and do things that have never been done on this earth?

No. We a want a better Call of Duty, not a better-looking Call of Duty. They're just tearing everybody's attention away from the fact that they're not creating a new engine, by introducing this new feature of lighting into the equation. It was never part of the equation, guys, and you're fooling no one. This whole charade is just an embarrassment to the gaming industry.

It's still going to be running off a 5 year old game engine... doesn't matter how much they tweak it. And it will still be a rehash of previous COD games.

Although, I'm surprised they even change anything... They can slap COD on any POS game and it will sell millions.

@gintheplacetobe 5 year old game engine? try pushing 13 years. Both Treyarch and infinity ward have come out saying (at E3 no less lol) that the game's engine is just a modified quake 3 engine, which according to them is how they can get 60 fps flat cross platform. I am not hateing on you lol, i totally agree with what your saying, this game needs a new turn as it has been stale since modern warfare 2. (to everyone els...i dont care if its world at war...black ops ...or modern warfare there all the same and all just crap copys of eachother lol)

sorry to break it to you guys but activision is not putting much time or work into these projects at all. yes the graphics is not the only important part, but it is a huge factor in what makes the game. it takes a lot of brainpower and work, trial and error into making these engines. this is all together taken out by this team. they just spend the time on copying and pasting and making maps and new weapons and makin a story. there is SOME work involved, but they dont want to spend any more than that. but that doesnt worry them because they know people will buy whatever the hell they put out there. which is WHY they try to make as many of these games as possible to see how much money they can rake in. this of course exciting to them cuz they get an endless amount of cash coming in. their strategy is to try to make as much money with the most minimum effort being put in and see how long they can do this. "oh i dont care about the graphics, its all about the game!" you guys can keep saying that cuz thats exactly what the company wants you to say in front of everyone lol. and i dont understand cuz the gameplay is still very stale. it was fun in MW1, but i'd get boring after 5 of them back to back. really? activision is extremely lucky to have these kind of supporters. repeat the same formula for 10 more games and they still will get the support and the loads of cash coming in. that is some lazy crap lol

Well two things. In regards to your same game engine rant, I bring to your attention the quality, QUALITY, of the Creed series. These are well thought, well designed, well written games that blend history with contemporary gaming. The devs use the same engine because the game doesn't need a shiny new engine that drives the game. It already has everything it needs. You fail to grasp this concept.

Second, it appears to me that you lack vision for the future and prosperity of video games. You rather would sit in the "here and now" and play whatever retooled, rehashed and re released game that floats your way. As long as there are vision-less gamers like you, gaming will not improve. The world does not need another Call of Duty.

What's the point making a new engine for old consoles like the 360 or PS3?

Once the new consoles comes out, i'm sure Activision will start working on a new engine.

@ronaldmcreagan No, they probably won't. They'll use their same Quake 3 engine, talk about making improvements (look, we added cool bullet casings!), drop some drivel about frame rates, and slap "COD" on it and they'll sell trillions to mindless, casual gamers and 6 year olds.

COD engine is what, seven years old? Activision will keep milking the engine as long as idiots keep buying it. Why waste time and money on a new engine if the game sells 10 million copies in two days?

I love those CoD haters that call people like me that ACTUALLY ENJOY the series "Idiots," "Fanboys," "Losers," and best of all, "Casual gamers," When in actuality, "Casual gamer," translates to "I have a life." You people that are upset about CoD being uninspired need to chill out. SChool takes a lot out of people like me and thinking outside of school is not what I want to do, especially not about a videogame. Aren't videogames supposed to be entertaining? So better graphics add entertainment value. How bad is that? Maybe people that like the series don't need a game that consumes their life...

@NumberlessName Plenty of people, graduates, parents, people "with lives" are real gamers. People who buy every sequel to this crap are not serious gamers who know the industry. That's FINE and all, but these people couldn't tell you about any games 10 years ago. Or their first console was an Xbox or PS2. That's the difference. Some of us even go to parties, have sex, and have vehicles. It's the skater teens, spoiled 12 year olds, and frat boy douche bags who fill the ranks of "causal gamer".

Better looking? Well I guess Activision thinks all gamers are a bunch of shallow/superficial souls, or at least those who Activision listens to.

Gamers want games that challenge them to use their heads, better gameplay, better story, fresh air in the franchise, something that set them different from other games deep down in their core, etc.

They need to completely reboot the Modern Warfare series now that the story arch is over. A fresh start, new story, and new engines would do a great deal to get "haters" to shut up. Granted, if Activision cured cancer, found the Holy Grail, destroyed the Taliban, and brought about world peace people would still bitch and moan at this point.

laughable...how bout....STARTING OVER, new engine, new plot, new mechanics new perspectives....and maybe....a single player campaign over 4.5 hours long???

Sports games kind of have to come out yearly, shooters....no, no, and no. Put effort into your ish and we might like it, stop pushing it out there and raping us with 60-70 dollars in DLC, make it with the DLC maps included...like a code so 2nd hand sales of your crap game cant jump online without paying.

Black ops was the last call of duty ill buy, MW3 was...ok, survivor mode should have been MW2. Activision has ruined some of my favorite games.
