Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

How about better gameplay, or a better plot? The first one was complete nonsense. At least the main three COD:MW games follow a decent narrative with a decent handful of interesting characters.

@Pyrosa The only "interesting" characters in the MW series are Soap and Price, and we only know them as gritty war machines, no personality.

@Pyrosa I have to disagree. I felt that Treyarch really put effort into creating a complex and interesting narrative; something that Infinity Ward seems to stay away from.

Most characters in the Modern Warfare games seem somewhat 2D. Yes, there's a bad guy, but we don't really get into him as a character much. There wasn't as much character depth and unique personalities within each character as Black Op's characters (plus, Modern Warfare 2 and 3's stories just seemed to be a random string of events thrown together).

However, I do agree with the fact that the Modern Warfare stories seemed easier to follow, which is what I think you're getting at.

It's amazing that this game WILL still look like a 6 year old game when it's released.

Wow, maybe after countless sequals and rip offs, try to put some descent ragdoll physics into the game and a bit less pro american - anti world story driven elements.

@Psy_m_on Really? That's what your mad about? What do you expect? It's made by an American company, published by an American company, and directly mainly at an American audience.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops."

I smell bullsh*t. Why is he trying to mislead people? Black Ops 2 still runs on the engine from 2007's COD 4.

@bobnice Two things:

1. You can still use the same engine and have higher quality graphics. Just look at Just Cause and Just Cause 2. They use the same engine (heavily modified in Just Cause 2's case), and they look radically different.

2. So you don't like it when game series use the same engine over and over again? Then explain why you gave an Assassin's Creed game a 10. They've used the same engine since the first game and will be using it again in AC3.

@toddx77 Nope. All they have do is put "COD [insert alternative story line here][sequel number here]" and the 15 year old zombies turn up in droves to drop 60 bucks on the same game, same engine, same graphics, with the addition of 2 perks. AWESOME BRO@%!@%@

Yes, because "great graphics" will somehow make this game so much different than the previous 4 COD games? What a joke. Here is how I explain COD series: You can put new paint on a pig, but it is still a pig.

It looks fine but the infrastructure is infantile compared to the industry standard.

Low max player count on servers.

2 players in coop is weak.

Special Operations have both text and voice chat disabled in the PC version.

No voting system in games.

The weakest hack protection I have ever seen.

@PinchySkree Could you be a little specific about what game you are talking about here?

The co-op mode in Black Ops II is still Zombies, and that features 4 players, not 2 (which I believe they are increasing to somewhere around 8, but I'm not sure).

There's no Spec Ops.

There's been a kind of voting system since Call of Duty 4 (vote to skip), which they've improved to specific map voting.

Can't say anything about the hack protection, though, other than the fact that they're trying a bit harder to stop it.

Graphics graphics graphics!! whatever happened to story, fun, and replayability?

That's why gaming is dying. cause it's all about flashy, whizz-bang visuals and no substance or creativity

@mischiefmeerkat I completely agree. I think, instead of trying to make graphics in games look more realistic, they should try making it less realistic and more creative and artistic.

Then, they can focus on creating unique ideas in the game.

@Slipstream720 @mischiefmeerkat That creativity you speak about in the indie community is dying because of the ADD tard generation that demands and keeps buying EVERY sequel that Activision makes like it's a giant cult, regardless of the product.

@Slipstream720 When so many games today are just COD clones or pandering to the action crowd and on disc DLC and day 1 DLC happening more and more then ya I say gaming is dying. Its because of those stupid people who have caused published to do more DLC and pander their games that next gen we will probably have to buy the games voice acting and music as DLC.

There was more inane double-speak in that paragraph than in just about every post-modern novel written in the last decade. They don't mean REFINED engine, Treyarch -- they want NEW code. Black Ops looked terrible -- it was muted and cartoony. And I'm still convinced that MW2 had better lighting and draw distance and "depth" than MW3. I'm not trying to sound fanboyish, but that's just the truth. Look at the detail on a map like Favela versus that damn jumble-of-rainbow-mishmash-it's-Italy-by-the-SEA! horseshit they dropped in MW3.New engine or GTFO...

How about you show us what you exactly what you mean because I sure as hell didn't see it in the trailer for this new COD. How about you also stop making the COD series a yearly release so that some real inovation can happen for a change?

What we mean by better graphics is a new engine as good or better than Frostbite 2. Not a slightly modified engine that has only slighty better graphics.

Since they're designing for current generation consoles, which are practically dinosaurs in computer years (a paltry half a gig of total system memory for starters), there's only so much they can improve graphically without dropping below their framerate target. Designing a new engine would be a large investment of time and money, and doesn't make any sense right now with next generation console hardware on the horizon. I would implore those who think it's cool to incessantly bash Call of Duty to at least clam up until the next generation arrives. You'll see your new engine then.

And if you prefer to take a shit on the gameplay, then please just grow up and realize that lots of people like it.

If they have to sacrifice 60 fps in order to get better graphics, then you better forget it.
