Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

Black Ops II = the only thing that can save Call of Duty.

This is it. Make it or break it. If this one fails, then there is no hope left.

How about instead of tweaking with the outdated engine even more, you actually create a new engine!!! :O Crazy huh? But yes I understand activision you want to pump out a new damn COD every year to milk the cow. Every time you tweak with an old engine, the more issues and bugs arise.

Graphical improvement are definitely welcome, but Treyarc needs to focus on the issues first. People have been exploiting CoD bugs for a while. Quickscoping, aimbots, they all need to go. People using them should have been banned years ago. Besides, sniping is a support mode, not an assault mode.

Is that what gamers want? I don't recall hearing much about CoD lacking quality in the graphics department. The graphics are typically held in high regard in online reviews. I DO however see a lot of folks complaining about playing a game that has remained the same for a number of iterations.

At least this game will work on the first day, won't take a lot of shots with a sniper to take down someone in hardcore, implement their funds on better multiplayer gameplay. (Looking forward to Zombies)

They should improve the graphics, imagine Call of Duty with BF3 graphics? To all you CoD haters, I remember when you used to say 'Stop this franchise' blablablah. Now from the comments I can see you rather have a 'change of gameplay?' Make up your mind.

I'm just wondering what Zombies will be like!

@RobinGS You will never get a COD this generation with BF3 graphics. Drop the console and convert to PC, it's the only way. This generation of hardware is so old, it's ridiculous. If COD added BF3 elements like vehicles and destructible buildings, it'd be unstoppable. THAT'S the problem with the decades-old stale game play. Why do fanboys try SO hard to deny that fact, or defend it? I don't get it. People can't be objective at all.

@RobinGS I want both. CoD nowadays is an old looking game with boring, 10 years old gameplay. That's not complex, games get old on both fronts, and they milked this cow too much, so now it's very weak in every aspect.

Wait a second...a modified version of the black ops 1 engine...correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they use a modified version of the cod4 engine? Honestly Activision, the problem isn't just the graphics, the engine is outdated, the franchise needs to take a break and start fresh, give your developers a couple of years to really tune the game instead of rehashing year after year. Everyone is getting sick of it, and the quality of the cod games has been sinking since mw1. If you truly wish to keep your money cow going, give it a break to bring back the milk.

It's pretty hard to do engine upgrades when the people responsible for developing it left due to shady management. It also doesn't help that every change has to be completed and tested within a single year to meet the annual release date. I find it amazing that this is still fundamentally the Quake 3 engine as modified for MoH: Allied Assault.

Next generation consoles will make the difference in visuals. I can only imagine minor enhancements at this stage in the current generation of consoles life-cycles. This is because of the limitations of the hardware in the consoles. If there wasn't a Call of Duty every year; people would notice the changes a lot more because there would be more time for a larger number of enhancements that currently get unnoticed from one iteration to the next.

Call of duty's graphics dont improve because its a console game, its that simple, and in the balance you have to do between graphics or fps for consoles, they choosed fps, nothing wrong with that.

Its all Bullshit. Never gonna buy any game from this franchise. The multiplayer is ruled by hackers and cheaters. And the matchmaking in multi F**king bullshit. Once i had play against 7 people, me being the only person in my team. To top it up, now there's new problem with theirs servers. They are asking us to check our service provider and routers. Activision why the F dont you check your server for once??

I think they need a new direction, honestly CoD turned into Need for Speed with an iteration every year, people got bored by this, its time they move to new terrain and create an open world cod with vehicle battles in the veins of the BF series.

That's what alotta people are saying, "fix the single-player and ditch the dlc rackets". But Activision doesn't listen to consumers; they listen to share holders. And shareholders want the 8th gen (flashier graphics) so that they can block used games and nix bc.

This has corporate propaganda written all over it.

I don't hear alotta complaints regarding CoD's graphics. But I do hear a swarm of complaints regarding CoD's often half-assed single-player campaigns and dlc rackets. Which means Activision isn't paying much attention to their consumers.

Honestly, I think Activision is cooking up the whole "gamers want better looking..." just to impose the 8th gen. The upcoming 8th gen is also a hot button topic, with all this talk of "used-game blocking" and "no bc". But, regardless of what gamers want, the console makers and mega-publishers are gonna force it.

Most of us are smart enough to not buy the 8th gen consoles. But, the gamers who compusively do buy them will only encourage gaming's current problems. Thanks, chumps.

Lol, same engine just slightly modified = big plans for activision. Why don't you hear the calls to stop making the franchise so stale and actually try and do something new and innovative with the gameplay? I forgot, half measures such as modifying an existing engine is much easier when your chucking them out on 2 year cycles (2 years by treyarch and 2 by infinity ward since they do consecutive games).

I don't play CoD,but at this point,CoD "hate" doesn't have much with the franchise itself.

It's just there, and even if Activision truly innovated something and updated the graphics engine,we would still be seeing a lot of "haters".It's cool to "hate" on CoD nowdays, but it's also cool to buy it on the release date, when the "hate" suddenly goes away...

@Rocker6 Sure there probably would be some hate, but then at least it'd be invalid and hate the fans can refute with valid points. Sadly COD is just not improving, ever. For them to think improving graphics is the way forward is kind of sad since it is the gameplay it was always lacking anyway.

@Sgthombre @baystatethrashr Sgthombre thinks he's so hardcore he can look at scores people gave games to. So what games, sgtasshole, should he have rated as 10's to have his opinion credible in your eyes? Exactly. You're a fanboy defense attorney for the franchise who can't stand it when people actually do think this franchise is old, stale, and crappy. Now go preorder the next 15 sequels and the next 200 map packs please.

60fps is good... the way the game plays is good... the competitiveness is good... the changes for BO2 are good... despite all the hate the game is actually setting up to be a good one... just imagine it with deeper more graphics with more depth and an engine that made the environments feel 3D/believable the majority of the time... now that would be the icing on the cake

I would rather have a better/longer campaign from COD. The last COD looked great, the campaign was only about 4 to 6 hours long. For a guy who only plays COD for the SP, it wasn't worth the $35 dollars I payed for it during a Steam sale.
