Activision aware gamers want 'better-looking' Call of Duty

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia says Black Ops II answers calls for better graphics with modified version of original Black Ops engine.

Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia is aware of the fan excitement for a "better-looking" Call of Duty and wants players to know that the engine running his studio's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II features advancements over the technology that ran the original Black Ops.

Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.
Black Ops II is sticking with the same game engine, but this isn't a bad thing, says Lamia.

"Engines, each time they get touched, they change," he said in an interview with Activision's One of Swords blog. "The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don't need to, and then they alter what they need to. You can't make a competitive product if you're not upgrading that engine along the way."

Concerning what is specifically new to the Black Ops II game engine, Lamia said the team focused on visuals and lighting advancements.

"I think what people are asking for is for us to push. They want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for. We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid. The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system. The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second--but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine."

Call of Duty: Black Op II is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. The game will feature a campaign split in two. One half of the adventure will pick up immediately following the events of the original Black Ops, with players following the journey of Frank Woods. The other half of the campaign begins in the year 2025, a time when advanced weapon technologies rule supreme.

For more on Black Ops II, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

I've read that treyarchs answer to better graphics is implementing dynamic lighting, which has been the standard in gaming since half life source. To add it now just seems like a lazy answer to people asking for a new engine.

Instead of graphics, how about focusing on changing gameplay so we don't have the feeling of going in a straight line for single player?

The only reason they came to that conclusion is that they brainstormed aspects they could/would change for the annual issue of COD and determined that that's all they could advertise as improved for the new release. So they slapped on the label of "fan-excitement" and Voila! it's a feature! Who cares about actually working on the gameplay, right, if you can re-release the same game year after year, and use different skins and ma - I mean, graphical improvements *ahem*.

CoD needs to push boundaries is other ways, the engine is great as it is, its reliable, good lookign and efficient.

What they need is took at the maps, the killstreaks, the teamplay.

Things like team perks, procedural maps and gameplay. Im not a game designer, but there is more to man shooting than CoD offers. Battlefield, TF2 and other games prove that.

@D1zzyCriminal Here's the thing: If they only did that, people would still be here whining about that they didn't completely start over. They can't win at this point.

I think it is safe to say that ALL developers are aware that gamers want 'better looking' graphics... But are they aware that we want better and more diverse gameplay?

Better graphics are not the lone answer to evolving video games.

Graphics are fine as they are, what they need to do ASAP is drop the console-ish gameplay once and for all FFS.

Health regeneration, QTEs, simplified corridor-like levels, cover system... That's what killed the genre.

@Madball357 Haha, ok. You keep playing shooters from the early 90's. The rest of us will move forward with the genre. And there is no cover system implemented in call of duty.

@ToughCritic28 Show my a cover system in a first person shooter that isn't broken, and I'll show you a dozen others where it's worthless. Your argument is invalid.

@ToughCritic28 most features he mentioned actually makes the gameplay more deep and complicated, thus evolved.

Your statement as a response to his its rather contradictory

If they think graphics are the only thing that needs improving, that means the majority of their players dont mind the things that most of us think that makes the game terible. CoD will never change...least medal of honor is coming out this year...before CoD

Anybody who actually though that COD graphics were gonna get better this gen are delusional. Cod is actually looks fantastic to be running at a constant 60FPS on consoles. that are 6 years old now. Holding 60FPS that steady under those condition is def quite an technical achievement. Now of course they could chop that in half and make it look much better but then it wouldnt be the same game. Graphics are def the least of COD's problems though.

@arevoir311 That fact that you resort to insults is quite sad. Especially since your the one that has no idea what you're saying. Anybody that has played a game a 60FPS then at 30FPS(which is usually prone too FPS dips so maybe even lower) knows there's a huge difference. Sometime it can feel like a different game. You would def loose some smoothness going from 60 to 30FPS although it would still be playable. The thing is though is that COD is all about its faced paced smooth gameplay. Put 2 and 2 together.

@Gen007 No idea what i'm saying? Ok, i only built my own gaming pc and have been studying computer science and game development for a few years now. And i didn't say 30. Where the hell did you get that from? I said 45. And no. There isn't a big difference between 60 fps and 45 fps. If you think so, then YOU have no idea what you're talking about. 45 is still quite smooth.

@AlabamaFan92 this is because bf3 actually takes in consideration PC and evolving technology, call of duty lives for consoles basically, so there you go, i play bf3 with the excellent graphics and at 60fps.

Thats the point im making they could push more graphical fidelity but at the cost of framerate. Going from 60 FPS would drastically change the way COD handles and im pretty sure most wouldn't like the change.

@Gen007 I am a pc gamer. But thanks for being condescending and assuming i have no idea what i'm talking about. And it's a good thing that it won't feel the same. The way it feels is cartoony and idiotic. And a SLIGHT framerate change, with the benefit of a more enjoyable game experience, would do activision some good.

@arevoir311 where did 45 come from? its a diff 60FPS and 30 FPS. That's half the frames. Technically the game will look the same but it wont feel the same. Its's hard to explain with words but people with exp know it. PC gamers know this and activision know this. You think they wouldn't hop at the chance to attract graphics whores to their game? They most certaintly would but then everyone would complain about how it dosent feel right if they did cut the frames in half. Also most games that have to run at 30FPS on consoles aren't locked either meaning that the FPS will often actually dip below 30. The FPS will be capped though so that it dosen't go over 30. The is to maintain consistent performance as best as possible. Whats rare to see is a game running at 45FPS though they rarely do that on consoles as it would be better to lock the FPS at 30 if you have a game that floats somewhere between 60 and 30 FPS.

Actually that's wrong. They -say- it runs at 60 fps at all times but modders have run fps-measuring tools on both BO and MW3 and found that they dip well below 60 fps a lot.

@Action When particle effects are involved (fog, explosions, a lot of tiny stuff) the framerate will always drop to 40. Consoles can't handle multiple objects well.

But it's better to have the fps drop from 60 to 40 than from 30 to 15, you know what I mean?
