Activision Blizzard Employees Are Walking Out Following Bombshell Report About Bobby Kotick

"We will not be silenced until Bobby Kotick has been replaced as CEO."

Activision Blizzard employees are staging a walkout today in the wake of The Wall Street Journal's bombshell report regarding CEO Bobby Kotick.

The ABK Workers Alliance group, which represents workers at Activision Blizzard and its subsidiary King, announced the walkout on social media. "We will not be silenced until Bobby Kotick has been replaced as CEO," the group said, adding that it continues to demand a third-party review of the company by a source chosen by its workers.

Now Playing: Activision Employees Stage Walkout Following Bombshell Bobby Kotick Report | GS News

In response, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson provided the following statement to GameSpot:

"We are fully committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and rewarding environment for all of our employees around the world. We support their right to express their opinions and concerns in a safe and respectful manner, without fear of retaliation."

This is the second major Activision Blizzard walkout this year. It follows one in July when the workers' group protested the company's "abhorrent and insulting" response to the lawsuits that document claims of sexual harassment of women, pay violations, and a "frat boy" culture.

The WSJ report--which was based on months of reporting, interviews, and sourced documents--claimed that Kotick had knowledge of numerous sexual assault and harassment claims at Activision Blizzard's various studios. It also said he did not notify the board of directors of an out-of-court settlement to an employee who accused a supervisor of rape.

The report also sheds light on the departure of Blizzard co-leaderJen Oneal and contains accusations of harassment by a Treyarch developer who left the company after the WSJ began investigating.

A spokesperson for Activision Blizzard said the company is "disappointed" in the WSJ report, saying it "presents an inaccurate and misleading view" of the company and Kotick. Kotick also personally released a video, transcribed and published by Activision, that responds to the WSJ report.

Kotick acquired Activision out of bankruptcy in 1991 for $400,000 with a group of investors and has been its CEO since. He is one of the highest-paid CEOs in the US, and not just in video games, making $154 million in 2020. Prior to the WSJ report coming out, Kotick agreed to take a massive pay cut and announced that Activision would end mandatory arbitration practice for employees.

If Kotick is finally get rid of due to this after ruining the industry and gaming for so long, it'll be like Al Capone getting busted for tax eviction. I'll still take it.

"Zero tolerance policy" To me it seems is just a witch hunt to get this guy out of his own company. He brought the company out of bankruptcy and now people want to take it from him. I hope he puts out a fight, it seems the public is over reaching out of hatred which is never good, this issue was already in the past and it seems a lot of people are getting out of their way just because they want this guy out.

@Zandeus: Blizzard already took measures from what I heard in the news to make things better for employees, he already took a cut in his salary, the law suits where already settle, so why people just keep bringing this subject over and over again. I can almost guarantee you that does not mater what he does to improve things, no one is going to be happy until he is axed out of the company for whatever reason you name. He SHOULD put out a fight because is his company, he bought it with other investors but it was his idea to bring it back and make it the multi million dollar company is today. If people where really unhappy working there, why it became so succesful in the first place, working for someone that is "human trash" as you said.

You want to talk about human trash, just take a look at the Theranos case, the people that ran that company deserve life sentence in jail.

$154 million a year for one guy.... wow, no wonder he agreed to a paycut, he has enough to last him a lifetime lol

Just think of how many employees could be hired or get a raise with just half of his yearly earnings.

I think it's possible that this is the straw that's going to break this camel's back. Up to this point Kotick hasn't be implicated in any way, so investors could feel comfortable keeping him around. The heat will be on this time, and the easiest way to reduce some of it will be to remove Kotick. As others have said, this won't solve the problem in any way, but it's a start.

What did the first walkout accomplish? Other than firing and golden parachuting a few inexpensive pawns, absolutely nothing changed. What will this second walkout accomplish? Look at the first walkout.

Activision Blizzard’s misbehavior doesn’t seem to have negatively affected Vanguard’s sales figures. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 will likely be unaffected. Activision Blizzard is full of scum top to bottom. But… People. Don’t. Care.

@sladakrobot: Actually it will help a ton.... Blizzard formed a third corporation with Activision and Kotick, called Activision/Blizzard -- which acted as a buffer to keep either or from dragging the other down and or keeping it from being taken over. More importantly it was a great tax incentive and allows investment IP on the 3 instead of two. This made the original guys from Blizzard insanely wealthy and allowed Kotick to slowly but surely start draining all value out of A/B and into his pockets through stocks, tax loopholes, and selling off properties.

During this time he made several Activision midlevel corporate douchebags the heads of A/B and B. The main people in Blizzard slowly gtfo of there. These suddenly middle aged million virgins had a taste of power that they had never seen, nor with a skill set warranted. Many many complaints have come over the years at their incompetence but amazed by their, yes men, mentality towards Kotick. The talent at Blizzard has been very vocal over the decisions in regards to these people. Also during this time a Developer Infinity Ward and Treyarch who made CoD MW 2 and 3 also, was very vocal in regards to the incompetence, as well as crooked dorks that A and AB forced upon them.

IT was very well known in the WoW community that the AB managers were very well known for wierdos and only there because of Kotick.

Will it end it all.... who knows, but damn that would be a good start.

I don't understand why Kotick even needs to work anymore.

Just retire, let someone else pick the company back up off its feet and make it full of passion instead of profit like it used to be.

Kotick deserves to go for what he did to the company and gaming in general.

But it does seem like there's some kind of organized campaign against ATVI in general lately. I'm sure if you dig into any major company you'll find all sorts of dirty laundry like this...but someone REALLY seems to want to dig into these guys.

Hey, I sold my stock and cancelled my subs months ago anyway. Go nuts. Maybe Microsoft can come in and buy the IPs for cheap when all is said and done.

@phattsao: Kotick strikes me as the kind of person who would rather blow up the company and pour acid on their server archives than let anyone have the IPs.

Wow. The comments are open.

Anyway, nice to see Kotick's time has come. It was looking like this was all going to end with little more than a stern glance and a child's promise of never doing badness again, so it's nice to see the gun being pointed at where it should have been in the first place: leadership.

That said, this feels less like people blaming him and more like everyone is taking advantage of the opportunity to get rid of Kotick. Which is fine. He sucks regardless, so whether he goes down for this or something else doesn't really matter.
