Activision Blizzard posts $15 million profit, revenue up $23 million

World's top publisher turns small profit on $703 million in sales; $4.05 billion 2009 outlook maintained despite concerns about holiday consumer spending.

Over the past two weeks, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Konami, Capcom, THQ, Ubisoft, Namco, and Square Enix all released their most recent earnings reports.

Today, it was Activision Blizzard's turn.

Guitar Hero 5 brought in cash, in more way than one.
Guitar Hero 5 brought in cash, in more way than one.

The world's biggest-third party publisher reported $703 million in net revenue for the July-September quarter, up from $680 million during the same period the year prior. More importantly, the company posted a quarterly profit of $15 million, way up from the $108 million the company lost in Q3 2008.

The quarter also saw Activision Blizzard's overall game software market share grow to 13.3 percent in the US. In Europe and the US combined, the company controls 12.3 percent of the software market, according to the NPD Group and Charttrack/Gfk.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Activision Blizzard's famously outspoken CEO Bobby Kotick credited Guitar Hero 5 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 as the quarter's biggest two debut games. Also helping fill company coffers were catalog sales of Guitar Hero and Call of Duty games and ongoing income from the massively multiplayer role-playing game World of Warcraft.

Kotick also tried to soothe the fears of analysts about slowing sales of rhythm games--such as Activision's own forthcoming DJ Hero, which is reportedly seeing lower-than-expected preorders. He pointed out that when all SKUs were combined, Guitar Hero World Tour was the top-selling game in the US and Europe for the first nine months of 2009.

"Year to date through September 30, the Guitar Hero franchise was the number-one best-selling third-party franchise in North America and Europe," Kotick said in a statement. "For the month of September, sales of music games in the U.S. increased 72 percent in dollars year over year, which demonstrates the sustained interest in this new and important game category." September saw the release of both Guitar Hero 5 and rival MTV Games' The Beatles: Rock Band, with the latter outselling the former but still managing to be unprofitable.

In the official Activision earnings release, Kotick was bullish on his company's slate for the current quarter, which includes Band Hero, DJ Hero, Tony Hawk: Ride, and next week's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. (The latter title is the now most preordered game in Activision and GameStop history.) However, speaking to Reuters, the executive was more candid, saying he was "very concerned" about recession-hit consumers' spending this holiday season.

Modern Warfare 2 boasts the most preorders in Activision's history.
Modern Warfare 2 boasts the most preorders in Activision's history.

"The question is whether the consumer will materialize, and I think there's huge risk that the consumer won't materialize," he told Reuters.

Kotick's fears aside, Activision is sticking by its full calendar year earnings guidance of $4.05 billion in net revenues and $0.26 earnings per diluted share of $0.26. It did warn, however, that the figure was subject to certain risks, such as World of Warcraft's ongoing struggle to switch localization partners in China. Earlier this week, operation of the MMORPG was threatened in the Asian nation by a dispute between two regulatory agencies of the Beijing government.

Finally, during a conference call with analysts after the report's release, Activision executives confirmed it was planning to release new installments in the Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, and Spider-Man franchises in 2010.

Activision itself is just a company. The actual game developers that have made Activision so successful...aka Blizzard with World of Warcraft and Infinity Ward with Modern Warfare, operate closely with consumers. I guess what I'm saying is that it's not really Activision's job to care what we think...they pay Infinity Ward and Blizzard to do that. Activision's job is to collect on the successes of far superior gaming companies.

If only these CEO's could come into our shoes and play their game that they have produced in a rush, and be able to say, "I get it now, releasing a new game every year, turns it into an entry point for my fans to start hating me." Like that will ever happen.

wait till they sell like 10 million MW2 copies on Xbox 360 before the end of the year, even more money. Of course the 1.5 million sold on PS3 will help too...lol

Still disappointed that Blizzard is merged with Activision. Blizzard by itself was awesome, pumping out titles and inventing epic storylines. Well, they still do, but the shadow of Activision is over them.

@ earlthecannibal: Activision, is not Blizzard. They are now under the same company but Blizzard did not release any information about their games, only Activision did. Do a little more research before you post. Blizzard is it's own entity in this case and this article only covers what Activision wants to release next year. Blizzard is still on track to deliver 2 products in 2010, probably the first part of StarCraft II and WoW: Cataclysm. If anything we should expect Diablo 3 at the earliest 2011, unless it does get released next year along with StarCraft II and Cataclysm

Activision has become the most hated company in video game publishing and EA seems to be learning that it can't treat it's customers like crap. If it wasn't for Blizzard, Activision would probably be posting big losses.

@kittyheart I've been a programmer for about six years now and Activision Blizzard isn't as bad as EA. Blizzard encourages ideas from its employees and you won't find one that really dislikes the work they do, and the result is awesome. There's a distinct difference between EA and AB. EA spends more money on advertizing than production and releases a title even if it isn't up to par standard. AB won't release it until it's polished and they spend a lot to make their employees happy and comfortable. Huge difference

@Shinkada I don't think World Tour with all its SKU's has shifted anything remotely close to the 12-15m that World of Warcraft has. For that matter, I don't think ANY of the Guitar Hero Games have shifted that many units. Granted, the franchise as a whole might have, but not each individual installment. Secondly, I'd also bet that WoW is a bigger money maker then Guitar Hero. If you estimate 10m subscribers, thats roughly 150m in gross income each month or 1.8b a year. If you use the last set of numbers, WoW bring in about 180m a month or 2.16b a year. A guitar hero game would need to sell around 21m copies to equal that number in sales alone, and you can't even say how much of that 100$ actually goes to Activision. I do agree, maintenance costs for WoW are probably expensive, but i'd put it at 5-10m a month TOPs, and thats shooting on the high side of it.

This is what we need: more games. And not just any game, hopefully they will all be quality. But I'm glad that theyre making a new GH since I'ev been looking for a new gaming expereince other than a controller. And as for the new COD it will probably be made by Treyarch. I don't see them making a modern game but rather either ww2 or vietnam. Vietnam would be awesome imo though. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that they haven't even announced any of them yet. I have a feeling they will come out towards the last quarter of the year.

@Windblade91: No, it's not. Guitar Hero alone manages to rival World of Warcraft's money intake, but substantially beats it out in raw profit. WoW requires constant money be paid for servers, for hundreds of GMs, for hundreds of developers constantly working on it. On the other side, Guitar Hero shifts almost as many units as WoW has, PER game, and doesn't require anywhere near as much in upkeep. Add in Activision's other games, as opposed to Blizzard which HASN'T released a game since WoW, and there you have it. Honestly, both companies are far more interested in money than they are in making great games. The BEST you could say of them is that they like making their customers happy... Which still doesn't equate to great games. I hope, so much, that they continue to go the way of DJ Hero. see: failure.

Go Blizzard, your amazing RPGs give that extra kick so much needed by the present gaming world, you're still releasing cult-hit games, though a lot of other companies keep doing good RPGs, yours are outstanding and better to any who takes the time to understand them.

I highly doubt that Guitar Hero: World Tour sold more copies of games then the Nintendo top dogs. Even if you consider all the SKU's as one game.
