Activision Listed Among "World's Most Admired" Companies

In the Entertainment sector, only Netflix and Disney are ahead of the Call of Duty publisher.

Business magazine Fortune has posted its list of the World's Most Admired Companies for 2017. Call of Duty, Destiny, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft company Activision Blizzard made the cut, ranking at No. 3 in the Entertainment Sector, behind only Netflix and Disney in that order.

Activision moved up three spots from last year, when it was ranked No. 6 in the Entertainment category. No other video game companies made the cut in the Entertainment sector.

No Caption Provided

Overall, across all industries, Apple was name the World's Most Admired Company. Rounding out the top five were Amazon, Starbucks, Berkshire Hathaway, and Disney. Microsoft landed at the No. 9 spot.

The results come from a survey that asked 3,800 executives, analysts, directors, and experts to rate companies on nine different criteria, from "investment value and quality of management and products to social responsibility and ability to attract talent." Additionally, only the highest-revenue companies in each industry (680 in 28 countries overall) were considered for the survey.

Full details on the survey's methodology can be found here.

Activision Blizzard reported earnings for its latest financial period last week, revealing new financial records. However, the company's Activision Publishing division suffered job losses.

In other news, Destiny 2 is scheduled for this year, as is a new Call of Duty game from Sledgehammer Games that goes back to the franchise's roots.

You guys complaining don't get it. Activision is successful in releasing the same crap and getting money, there aren't many companies that can do that. Why wouldn't you admire them for that?

On a list that works inversely, that's not exactly anything to be proud of. The higher you are, it's likely the more your customers hate you. Need to find that balance of making money, while keeping customers happy.

Nice click-bait Gamespot. Title should have read:

Activision Listed Among "World's Most Admired" Companies... by 3,800 executives, analysts, directors, and experts who only care about making money.

@Thanatos2k: Investors admire and gamers buy their products. So in end a flawless victory where it counts

Either all the complainers are spineless and they buy, or the complainers are just a <5% segment of the gamers

World's worst collision detection, maybe. The other thing that's alway driven me crazy is how bullets disappear mid air when you die. Wtf? It's been that way in every CoD that I can remember. I don't get it. I'm not an expert on these things, but I'm pretty sure if you fire a gun, and then get killed, your bullet still hits something.

sounds like it was a top-tier survey. In other words, they only asked the people at the very top.

"So Hitler, who do you admire?"

"Oh, I like zee Pol Pot, Stalin, and I think even zee Charlie Manzon!"

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: what's that supposed to mean?? what they have good cash reserves?? uuhh hell no they don't, only MS has massive cash reserves....none of the other publishers are as financially strong as they were 10 years ago let alone 15 or 20 years ago......

every year companies lose money and panic and make stupid mistakes and lose more money and it's a vicious circle, if even one company took a step back, focused on 2 or 3 games for the whole year and put everything into em that year then they might make a bit more.....maybe if they made more games but smaller focused games like what Far Cry Blood Dragon was they might all make more....cus that game was short, to the point and not drawn out over 100 hours of boring side missions.....Far Cry 4 however get's boring a couple hours in....and it lever lets up......companies keep talking larger worlds yet we keep getting these watered down games....why?? cus they're unfocused, they go 1000 directions and lack cohesion.....

purely games talking now I kinda wanna take Warren Spector up on his concept, a one block simulation RPG, one city block rendered and simulated down the the smallest detail and see what kind of story can come from it......smaller games aren't bad, they could be the saving grace cus if the game world for a let's say detective tale and it was set in one block of a city and you were investigating a murder and knew the killer was within the block you could take your time investigating and methodically go through everything and question everyone right? then find the killer and arrest him/her.....that'd be a neat game....we kinda got it too with LA Noire but we left a trail of bodies in that and it was a whole city.....imagine that on one city block though??? gods.......

Yeah other businesses admire how they constantly get their customers to constantly buy into shady business practices. They set a trend for disc-locked content, removing content to resell as dlc, and my personal favorite $50 season passes.

@fig56: Well Blizzard had a strong following in the 90's that continues to this day on PC. They hit gold with WoW, CoD, and found a way to win the bid for Destiny. They know what sells and keep on selling it. The problem is every time they release something they farther push their fan base with money grabbing practices.

The other thing is Activision makes a lot of deals for movie tie-in games. However, the quality of those games have gone down the drain. They get a movie license and hire the cheapest studio who will complete the game in the shortest amount of time. This is how Activision has operated the last 10 years, so I personally do not support them anymore.

Have they changed the definition of admire since the last time I've looked it up?

ad·mire

/ədˈmī(ə)r/

verb

  • 1. regard (an object, quality, or person) with respect or warm approval: "I admire your courage" synonyms: esteem, approve of, respect, think highly of, rate highly, ... moreantonyms: despise, disapprove of

Strange. Perhaps they meant despise.

See? You just tell Bobby Kotick to go sit in a corner and shut up and this happens.

As a gamer though, I will say that I place Blizzard on a very high pedestal. Those guys consistently put out great stuff and I'm always excited to see what they're up to next. The culture is much different from the rest of Activision as well.

@cboye18: it's based on how well the company does financially, for the most part, and is voted on by people who would invest. This isn't a consumer popularity poll
