Adam Warlock Isn't In Avengers 4, So It's Back To The Drawing Board For Fan Theories

Since Avengers: Infinity War somewhat follows the 1991 Marvel comic Infinity Gauntlet, fans thought Adam Warlock was going to show up. When he didn't, moviegoers assumed that the character will at least be in next year's yet to be titled Avengers 4. However, according to the co-director Joe Russo, Warlock won't be popping up next year either.

The comic book follow-up to Infinity Gauntlet is Infinity War, and the start of that miniseries is the cosmic character Adam Warlock getting control of Thanos' gauntlet and the Infinity Stones. However, while talking to ComicBook, Avenger: Infinity War director Joe Russo explained Avengers 4 will be a bigger departure from the source material. "Yeah [Adam Warlock]'s not showing up in our stories," Russo told ComicBook. "Look, our job, as we said a million times, is to tell the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not to do direct adaptations of the comics because we're comic book fans.

"I have no interest as a director in telling a story that's already been told or in seeing one that's already been told. If I know all the events story as they're going to happen then what's the point of going to the film? We want to keep surprising audiences and continue the story that started with Iron Man [...] a decade ago."

Warlock won't be making his full big screen debut in the next Avengers film, but he has technically been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe already. In 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Warlock's cocoon from which he was birthed was revealed in a mid-credit sequence, which featured the gold-skinned Ayesha saying she's created a being that is the next phase of evolution for her species. Additionally, this being will help destroy the Guardians of the Galaxy, and she will call him Adam.

Most likely, we won't see Warlock again until Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and even that isn't confirmed, as director James Gunn tweeted back in November. The third installment of Gunn's cosmic Marvel series is, but no release date has been set yet, and we probably won't know more until after the release of Avengers 4.

So what can we expect from Avengers 4? Well, fans will be getting Captain Marvel for sure, as the post-credit sequence alluded to the character. Sadly, we'll have to wait a year to find out when Avengers 4 comes to theaters on May 3, 2019.
