After a Month on PS4, Darkest Dungeon PC Sales Still Lead by a Huge Margin

Darkest Dungeon sells one million copies, and official modding support is still on the way.

Darkest Dungeon launched on PS4 and Vita in September, and now developer Red Hook Studios has announced that it's surpassed one million copies across all platforms.

Red Hook did a sales breakdown of where each copy was sold on its website, noting that Steam accounts for 94 percent of them. While Steam is "enormously popular," the lopsided number can be explained further. For one, Darkest Dungeon's Early Access phase was only done on Steam, and the game sold more than 50,000 copies in its first 24 hours.

Now Playing: Darkest Dungeon - GameSpot Plays

It wasn't until the full release on January 19, 2016, that the game launched on GOG. Additionally, crowdfunding via Kickstarter and Humble Widget accounted for the first 11,000 or so copies sold. The PS4 and Vita's sales are described by Red Hook as "decent so far," having shipped around 50,000 copies worldwide.

The dungeon-crawler roguelike has performed the best, sales-wise, in the United States, but it's also done well in many other parts of the world. Red Hook says this is why it pushed to localize Darkest Dungeon in seven languages at launch and plans to add more later.

The post then talks about some of its past announcements, including its first DLC, The Crimson Court. Red Hook notes that mod and Steam Workshop support, which it announced this past April, is still on the way. The developer also teases bringing Darkest Dungeon to more platforms, such as tablets, handhelds, and other consoles. Nothing more specific than that was mentioned.

Lastly, Red Hook confirmed that it will make another game. Calling it "Game 2" for now, the untitled game hasn't begun production, but when it does, Red Hook won't have concluded its support or new content for Darkest Dungeon.

"[A]s long as you keep supporting what we do, we want to keep making things for you!" Red Hook stated. "It is not hyperbole to say that we are doing our dream jobs, and we love what we do. We also specifically love Darkest Dungeon, despite the fact that we, too, sometimes lose our favorite heroes and want to destroy our keyboards.

"We get Afflicted from time to time during development, though we aren’t quite ready to share with you what each of our predominant Afflictions are!"

Darkest Dungeon received a score of 9/10 in GameSpot's review for its "deep, evolving play that encourages broad strategies" and "foreboding atmosphere [that] sets a gripping tone of hopelessness."

Game is shit according to all who've played it past the first couple of levels.

Might pick it for $5 on iPad - if and when.

On their website, Red Hook Studios shows a timeline of discounted sales on Steam. If you cross-reference that with the Steam Discounts history for the game, you will notice that a large portion of their Steam copies were moved during the 33% and 50% off sales -- and most of those discounts were on the $20 early-access price. So far their game has not been put on discount on the PS4, and it's sticker price is $24.95. So, as far as total revenue is concerned, the PS4/Vita version is doing quite well. I'd guess as a measure of total revenue the PS4 version accounts for somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20% already.

@lonesamurai1: in fact it is very easy to mod, you can improve and customize it a lot, take a look on Nexusmods, you can add entire new classes if you want.

It's not selling good on PS4 because the control scheme is so bad.

Walk along on a small screen, open a chest, plot an attack, strategize next move, repeat. Pass. No reason to play this game unless you have no life and would like to spend countless hours on something so repetitive and boring.

@Rambolike: Mobile, for when you spend a LOT of time sitting in airports and on planes... Turn-based / Strategy games are mandatory.

Isn't there an Android port of this coming soon?

Related tough indie, Don't Starve, finally hit Android, and other than the control scheme seems to run quite well.
