After ESPN, Yahoo Is Now Getting Into Esports

Yahoo Esports will cover League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, Dota 2, Street Fighter V, Counter-Strike: GO and more.

Not long after media giant ESPN announced plans to get into Esports in a big way, Yahoo has now done something similar. The company today announced the formation of Yahoo Esports, which it's calling a "new premier destination for delivering professional Esports coverage across major games and events."

No Caption Provided

The site's editorial staff will create "unique video content" around major Esports tournaments, while they will also produce "marquee interviews and in-depth features." The Yahoo Esports site itself will also host event calendars, player rankings, and other relevant statistics and information.

Yahoo Esports has hired Andrea Rene, Travis Gafford (Ed note: Gafford formerly worked at GameSpot), and Taylor Cocke for its weekly League of Legends coverage, while Dylan Walker will provide breakdowns of Heroes of the Storm and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The site also plans to cover games such as Dota 2, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and Street Fighter V, with more titles added to the mix in time.

"We're approaching our coverage of Esports with the same tenacity and professionalism we always have with Yahoo Sports, News, and Finance," Yahoo executive Bob Condor said in a statement. "Coupled with our experience in building great products, we've gone out and assembled an experienced and innovative content team that will cover Esports from every angle."

An overview video for Yahoo Esports is available below.

I don't mind the thought of ESports as a whole but you have to admit that some the the games they choose are just so boring to watch.

If different individuals competing with each other in particular level physically or mentally, then that thing can be called sport. But I think it has to be fun in order to have a viewers and fans to be called proper sport.

Is there really money in e-sports? When I watch streams of certain tournaments, there are barely any viewers.

Where are the esports for the single player games? Those are the one's I'm interested in. Well, except I wouldn't want to watch someone else play. Basically, people should just pay me for playing games.

I love that something I grew-up with as a niche hobby now gets this kind of recognition. It's clear playing SFV that it was designed as a sport first rather than a game. Games about sports have modes. Sports do not. There is one way to play and all competitors are measured by the same metric. That being said, extras are still en route for all of us that can't spend 8 hrs a day playing one game like a job. It's unfortunate but I'm probably getting too old to ever compete at that level anyway. I'm like an armchair e-athlete who still plays for love of the game.

This "trend" needs to stop. It's an embarrassment to the legitimate sports out there. Playing video games is not a sport, it's a hobby!!!!

@ZamboniGamer: I take E-sports as just being a catchy name. Gaming lacks the physicality of sport - but it has some overlaps in terms of honed skill, strategy etc. I think of it as Pro-gaming which is what it is.

There's is a skill to manipulating sticks , mouse or buttons to do exactly what you wanted to in game, but its a different kind of contest.

@ZamboniGamer: If Chess can be a sport then so can Gaming. I do think it needs to leave traditional sports alone though. Trying to become relevant in the same areas as physical athletic sports is only going to antagonise the people in those sports.

They can call it a sport all they want but trying to become relevant on ESPN. Just no.

@ZamboniGamer: esports has just as many legitimacy to be on TV as motorsports. being a pro-player takes almost as much physicality as driving a 5 ton truck in the Dakar desert, or reading the map next to the driver

@ZamboniGamer: U mad? Chess in many countries has official sport status. So...?

When you're practicing a competitive game for at least 5-6 hours each day, it's not a hobby. It's like a regular job.

Redhead McPrettyFace is on the job bringing you the big scoop on everything E-sports. What will Trendy-Beard Man have to say about the magnificent jungling job? Whatever it is, you can bet it will hit him RIGHT IN THE FEELS!

And what does GameSpot's corral of baby-tee shirt wearing gals think about this? What can this possibly all mean for E-Sports? Tune in to find out!

Wow all these media companies see that e-sports coverage is sparse and fractured among different websites and they want that traffic. They see an opportunity and it is glaringly obvious that e-sports info on the web can be harder to find than it should be.

The only problem I see for these big media companies is that I don't know if it's worth it monetarily for them yet. I'm guessing they're trying to corner the e-sports news market before a strong competitor emerges.
