After Fortnite's Success, EA Says It Might Make A Free-To-Play Battle Royale Game

EA says it wants to experiment with a free-to-play standalone battle royale game.

The battle royale phenomenon has been one of biggest stories of the past year--and it's not stopping soon. EA's next big shooter, Battlefield V, will have a battle royale mode, while Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have one, too. EA has now commented further on the matter, teasing that it could release a standalone free-to-play game of its own.

During an investor call today, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen was asked directly if Battlefield V's battle royale mode could see a separate, standalone release as a free-to-play game. It probably won't, Jorgensen said, according to GI.biz. However, he said EA could make its own free-to-play, standalone battle royale game further down the track.

Now Playing: EA Wants To Replicate Fortnite's Success With A New Battle Royale Game - GameSpot Daily

"We're interested in experimenting with a free-to-play standalone game that might be in a shooter genre or another genre," he said when asked specifically about the possibility of EA making a standalone free-to-play battle royale game like Fortnite. "But I don't think that's how we're looking at the Battlefield stuff right now."

You will see more of what Jorgensen is talking about in the coming "months and years," he teased.

Given the immense popularity of Fortnite, PUBG, and other battle royale games, it makes sense that EA would want a piece of the pie. Battlefield V having a battle royale mode is a way for the publisher to get in on the action right away, but it would be potentially more exciting to see the studio make a completely new game in the space.

Previously, EA CEO Andrew Wilson talked about how battle royale is "clearly a mode of play that the global FPS population is interested in." As such, he said at the time--before Battlefield V's battle royale mode was announced--that EA would be looking at the space.

EA has yet to show any footage of Battlefield V's battle royale mode. The franchise is known for its large-scale maps, vehicles, and destructibility, which could make Battlefield great for the battle royale genre, though how it all works out remains to be seen.

Battlefield V launches in October for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For lots more on the World War II shooter, check out GameSpot's roundup of everything we know about it.

Oh yeah? Lemme play out this likely future; you'll tell the newly bought Respawn to stop working on everything they're making to build this F2P game, then it flops hard because you published a multi million dollar game in a ridiculously crowded market. Once it flops, you make the executive decision to shut down Respawn, keeping all their assets for their original games, and only keeping a few higher level employees.

We've seen how this plays out before EA, just don't do it.

After seeing fortnites FREE GAME and more importantly its MT's system making the now billionaire creater wealthy.

With Star wars BF2 costing £50 plus loot box/MT system failing (controversially and harming their company).

Now EA want to make the same EA MT system only it'll be free trying to con customers into buying into it without forking out £50 to begin with, oooo the digital snakes!

And to think Star wars BF1 + 2 were good games without them, not mind blowing but very good looking and fun.

@mrdinghat: I'm sure an absolute ton of people do, hence the popularity of BR games, I'm just not one of them.

@UltimateBastard: That's like saying people wanted MMOs, hence the popularity of WoW. No, they wanted WoW. Almost all other MMOs that tried to be like it failed as a result.

That's like saying people wanted MOBAs, hence the popularity of Dota and LoL. No, they wanted Dota or LoL. Almost all other MOBAs that tried to be like them failed as a result.

Same here, which is why all other BR games have failed miserably. The market is established. No one wants your copycat garbage.

@Thanatos2k: I was going to say the same thing, why would people switch to another BR when fortnite does it so well (I'm not a fan but I can see why everyone plays it) and that's where the largest number of people are!

@thewindburner: @Thanatos2k, you's could be right, but If someone like dice for instance, where making a standalone BR game, I would bet a ton of fans of the battlefield series would jump ship for it, same for cod fans etc.

@UltimateBastard: Ah just like all the Star Wars fans would jump ship from WoW if someone made a standalone Star Wars MMO.

Wait, that didn't happen. The TORtanic sunk.

@Thanatos2k: Well if Jim said so! Jesus man, grow an independent thought! The point I was originally making was that if massively established game companies like EA, had their devs, like dice, create a stand alone BR game, based on BF, a lot of fans of said game, would undoubtedly jump ship for developers that have made a lot of games they've loved for years, as would be the case of cod players and the likes. This isn't some random unknown company coming along and copying shit(although they're still copying shit), it's a developer with an already well established fan base.

More so, when you compare something like an MMO to BR, thats just silly, setting aside the fact MMO's and MOBA's are basically none existent on consoles, MMO's are far more niche and massively time consuming, theres far more to lose when moving to another MMO. I could drop the bag on PUBG and Fortnite right now, and never feel like I've lost anything.

@UltimateBastard: Ah yes, posting other people supporting what I'm saying is having no independent thoughts. Rather than evidence.

Instead, you might consider that you're simply wrong, considering history has shown what I've been saying to be completely right. But hey, maybe Battle Royale games will be completely different for no rational reason. EA thought Star Wars would be enough and were wrong. Surely BATTLEFIELD, a mediocre bro shooter brand, will pull it off.

I don't think they can make something more appealing than Fortnite BR at this point. At least not quick enough to ride the BR high...

Just... stop with this battle royale nonsense! If i want to play BR, i'll download Fortnite or PUBG... No need for every damn game to feature a mode like that. Its just a overrated deathmatch variant.

I don't think this whole "Battle Royale" thing is going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, I think it's here to stay, but not in it's current form. I think it will simply become a standard game mode amongst shooters like Team Deathmatch. I think we will stop seeing standalone titles for this mode. Pretty soon, announcing a shooter features a Battle Royale mode will sound as silly as saying it features Team Deathmatch. It won't be special for long. It won't be big news forever. It's simply in its introductory stage and everyone wants a piece of the pie until they stuff themselves with said pie so much that they're no longer hungry for it and will begin looking for something new with a different flavor. Just my opinion on the whole thing.

Yeah we definately need more of these games. I'm sure it will go well like all these DotA rip-offs we had when MOBA was popular...

EA: You'll not take that Battle Royale cash from me!

Gamer: You're anger and lust for cash have already done that... You've let these dark investors twist your mind till you became the very thing you swore to destroy.

EA: Don't lecture me gamer... I see through the lies of entitled gamers, I do not fear profitability as you do! I have brought online passes, forced multiplayer, day one DLC and loot boxes to my new empire!

Gamer: You're new empire?!

EA: Don't make me sue you!

Gamer: EA my allegiance is to no pre-orders.. to reading reviews!

EA: If your not with me then you're my enemy!

Gamer: Only a corporate CEO deals in absolutes... I will do what I must...

EA: You will try...

[facepalm]

These same execs are failing to see the growing pile of failures that have already accumulated post-PUBG, post-FNBR.
