After Years Of Struggles, Unsung Story Loses Its Original Kickstarter Developer

The new game from the director of Final Fantasy Tactics has switched hands.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, the successfully funded Kickstarter game from Final Fantasy Tactics director Yasumi Matsuno, has lost its developer. Playdek announced in a Kickstarter update (via Kotaku) that it's no longer working on the game, with the publisher/developer Little Orbit take over going forward.

"Our involvement is coming to an end," Playdek said. "Effective immediately publisher/developer Little Orbit has taken over all the rights and assets to Unsung Story from Playdek, and is now the project creator. They believe strongly the game can be an amazing Tactics RPG, and they are excited to carry on and bring Matsuno's story to life. They will be bringing you project news from this point on to update everyone on their plans for the game."

Playdek thanked fans for their support, and said it believes Unsung Story "is in good hands" with Little Orbit.

"Though we are sorry that we were unable to complete it for you, we believe the project is in good hands, with people who have the same passion for the game," Playdek said.

In February last year, Playdek gave fans some tough news when the studio said it was putting Unsung Story on the back burner as it focused on other projects instead. At the time, Playdek said it was considering working with an outside studio to get the game made, though the possibility of completely stepping aside as it's done now is new.

Unsung Story successfully raised more than $660,000 from close to 16,000 backers. It is billed as a spiritual successor to Matsuno's line of tactical RPGs, reimagining the genre with "complex and rich game worlds" as well as "inspiring class-based tactics gameplay."

Some of Little Orbit's games include Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends and Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations.

All of you should read GamesIndustry.biz article.

That said, I will say this: never give money to games which are not finished, much less those which are yet to be made at all.

Among the ones scammed, hopefully Playdek will go bankrupt soon enough. They deserve it.

Little Orbit apparently did Falling Skies: the Game, which was an XCOM EU clone. That gives some hope that at least they created a game in the genre.

I was interested at the time, but elected not to back it. Will certainly be interested in the new dev can finish the game.

This is why I never back anything on kickstarter. I don't trust it.

I am one of the poor fools who fell for this Kickstarter mess of a game, but I do feel better knowing it's in a different developer's hands. I at least can say my money is no longer going towards the other games Playdek is developing.

Is there a chance that Little Orbit will make a sub par game? Sure. But when at rock bottom, it can only go up.

@snugglebear: It funded Playdek developing other games. No, really, that's where it went and they shamelessly admitted it while leaving backers twisting in the wind. They have nothing done for this game.

@Thanatos2k: Damn. That's what i was afraid of. I hate that they can't be held accountable for this. How underhanded.

@snugglebear: One more real-life example which shows that people should not put their money where there are no guarantees or enforceable obligations.

If the original developers were so stupid, then it's already in better hands...

People felt similar about all the changes to Killer Instinct when that arrived, and we all got positively surprised.

They went from Rare (who's one of the most beloved developers of all time) to being developed by Double Helix, a developer who had no good games on their record, and mostly licensed games.... the game came, AND IT WAS AMAZING

Then after season 1.... new developer AGAIN...! How could this go well...?

Especially after already spending one miracle on this game... well... Iron Galaxy did just as great a job, at the very least, and the game is still in incredible hands with them.

I know these kind of stories are unlikely... but stay positive... especially when the original developer was so shitty

With this game being the first potentially good and worthwhile game for them to make, they have a lot to prove, and will likely go ALL IN

This is the downside of Kickstarter unfortunately. Regular Joe's invest money into a product that they want and it's up to the producer to actually create and deliver the project. I've kickstarted several successful projects and only one has not delivered to this point. This instance here though, this is something completely different - getting funding to develop a specific game and then deciding "meh, we're going to put that on the backburner and work on something different instead".... that is incredibly shitty. That is fraud. That shit wouldn't fly in a legitimate business environment.

@smoke_dog_4ever: That's the real problem - they have no accountability once they take the money. Kickstarter doesn't enforce any guidelines whatsoever for project owners to actually have to work on the thing they promised.

@Thanatos2k: It's a problem with investing period. Investing in anything is a huge risk. More often than not, you lose your money. Poor management, poor use of funds, many times ppl fail to realize just how much money it really costs to get a product going. There's not much security in investing. Even fraud cases are really hard to prove most of the time and take awhile to investigate. Which usually means a lot of smaller cases go uninvestigated to go after the bigger ones bc there's not enough manpower/funding. It would be really nice with all the money Kickstarter makes to hire a team to try to enforce things. But considering anyone can make a kickstarter, it's failed from the get go.

@inebriantia: No, an actual investment has actual laws protecting you from the fund managers taking the money and gallivanting off to parts unknown.

Kickstarter is donations to a charity. Scratch that, charities have laws holding them accountable. It's donations to a homeless guy on the street who says he'll pay you back. Maybe he'll come through, but he could also just blow it on booze. Plan accordingly.

I'm hopeful we'll get something. It may not be anything great, but at least the new dev has experience, y'know, actually getting games out the door, never mind that their track record has all been licensed stuff.

Fully expecting there'll at least be better production values than Mighty No. 9, however low a bar that is.

@Ryusui: For all the shit Mighty No. 9 gets, they released a finished complete game. That'll be more than this scam fiesta releases.

Kickstarter is a scam! Anyone who is considering investing in a kickstarter, would be better off investing in a Nigerian lottery.

@visforvictory: That's like saying "Craigslist is a scam!"

No, Craigslist is not a scam - there are scammers on Craigslist. Just like Kickstarter is not a scam - there are scammers on Kickstarter.

Kiss of death. Project is never going to release in a quality state, and the money will run out. Actually it probably already has, Playdek seems like a company of scammers. They apparently haven't posted an update in over 7 months. Frauds.

I guess Japanese developers are more interested of making mobile games instead.

“Inevitably many of you will google us, and you may have your doubts – which is okay. This project has struggled. But give us a little time, and hopefully we’ll surprise you.

I am a gamer at heart, and my first love has always been turn-based tactics games. I met the Playdek team a couple months ago and got a firsthand look at the amazing work from Yasumi Matsuno. Simply put, this game needs to exist, so I am excited to be taking this project over and helping deliver it to the community.” said Matthew Scott CEO of Little Orbit
