Ahead Of E3 2019, Sony Says It Will Never Stop Making Story Games

Sony believes in story games.

Some industry-watchers and fans have worried that the rise in popularity of live service games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and others could inspire publishers to move away from story-based, narrative games. That's not going to happen at Sony, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan.

He told GameSpot sister site CNET ahead of E3 2019 that Sony is enjoying huge success today with its story-based games like Spider-Man, God of War, and Days Gone. You can expect Sony to continue to make these games on an ongoing basis, Ryan said.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II - PGW 2017 Trailer

"We've never had greater success with our own narrative-driven, story-based games than we're having right now," he said. "We feel good about that, and it's certainly not a genre of gaming we'll ever walk away from."

Ryan said live service games are still growing in popularity, and it's contributing to the "overall gaming ecosystem" getting bigger and bigger.

"If you're going to do this you have to do it really well," he said about live service games. "It's a form of entertainment that has to be built incrementally, you can't sort of plunge in and build one of these live service games and get it right from day one. It's got to be evolved and iterated and it's not easy. It's really not easy."

Sony's next big story game is Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Part II, which appears to be nearing the end of its long development period. Sony is not attending E3 2019 this week, so it might be some time before it announces more details, like a release date.

While Sony won't be at E3 this week, Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, and others are coming to the show with new game announcements and more on tap. For more on the big show, check out GameSpot's E3 2019 hub to follow along with all the big news.

Then you will keep getting my support for consoles.

Something tells me that AC, GTA V, RDR2 are showing that the genre isn't dead at all

A star wars single player game would have been great EA, if you did it right

The vast majority of the games as a service thing are barely average at best from my experience with them. I know for fact that I have played significantly more story driven games and enjoyed them than the shallow online games as a service thing. That is a personal experience but it would seem a few people on this board tend to be in the same boat.

Reminds me of Bethesda, releasing a statement in favour of single-player story games then almost immediately announce an online-only multiplayer game.

As much as Sony are saying (and doing) the right things, to be honest I don't think the industry in general is turning it's back on story-led games. A year or so ago, it did seem like it was going down the pan, but in recent times the multiplayer-only route is not quite the unstoppable be-all-and-end-all it was in, say, 2017. Even CoD is bringing it's campaign back.

That's good to hear. I couldn't care less about the online crap.

And to the people who are saying that story driven games are interactive movies with little gameplay. You couldn't be more clueless.

Spider-Man, Gears of war 4, The last of us, God of War, GTA 5, Days Gone, Assassins Creed, Uncharted and many many more. How could you be that ignorant to say these are interactive movies? Quality gameplay and story. Man, that are true, real games.

Either you live with mommy or you're 9 years old to be able to say such things......

Yeah, I'm a single player campaign kind of gamer and I hate how everything has been going massive online MP social lately. Many people won't touch a game unless they can play it with minimum 3 other people. I just can't get into battle royale games and twitch shooters are fun for an hour here and there but it's the deep immersive RPG's and single player campaigns that I love and they seem to be becoming an endangered species.

Yup, everything you just said. Especially about RPGs.. It's a sad state of the industry. Between this, censorship and the push to go all digital/streaming, everything is a real mess.

That's it, I'm not skipping the next PS. Meanwhile Origin doesn't even matter anymore, and they gave me Sims 4 for free!

Pretty sad and scary state of things when this has to be said at all! Story is one of the main things that draws me into games.

Now if only they would learn the dangers and stupidity of censorship, and the utter futility of kowtowing to the different outside groups and people (all types of whiny moralists new and old) who will never be happy until gaming content consists of either nothing but overt feel-good ideological propaganda, and or after school special/schoolhouse rock level drivel... Or worse, the former in the form of the latter.

In general they should really work on not inexplicably periodically shitting on whole segments of their gamer customers. (see the SEA RPG banishment attempt of the PS1 era, the 2D apocalypse of the PS2 era, the current censorship, the PS3 lockdown, the cross-play intransigence, the list goes on..)

Well I wouldn't go that far.. They are currently dragging the ind back down into censorship hell after all.. But at least they got this part right.

It worries me that they have to say something that should be obvious and taken for granted.

@gustavob: the search of profit will evaporate that. Hell, if it does that with rights, why not for products?

I personally buy games for the story more than the gameplay because I want to be lost in the world and lore and even basic controls and gameplay can keep me engaged to it I dont need realism or overtly complexed button combinations, combo memorizations to enjoy a game. This gen though kinda sucked storywise it wasnt that impressive. God of war story wasnt that good compared to its predecessors, same with metal gear solid that story stank compared to its predecessors. I would love more new story elements, days gone and uncharted have been done endlessly. Resident Evil can use a new plot, capcom can bring back megaman x as I want to see that story come back. a new action paced shooter with a nice story, cops, gangs, you name it. even ace combat should have a better plot as the last one was dull and boring yet the gameplay fantastic. Final fantasy was a let down when the animated movie was more interesting than anything shown in the game

@Archangel2222: me too.

I purchased Alan Wake on different platforms, Day 1 on console.

Meanwhile, they gave me Destiny 2 for free after a time and it doesn't even interest me after and hour and half.

Yeah, the story in FFXV was a real letdown.

I thought MGSV had some good moments. The end of Quiet’s story and the sequence going through the quarantined section of motherbase were quite memorable.

@Pedro: Its not hard to skip a cutscene by pressing X or Start. But all for more and improved story devs are getting lazier in telling a plot and creating characters and worlds.

@Pedro: Skippable cut scenes. Quip invalidated. And any game without the option gets hated.

@Barighm: oh that they do, they really do. Cutscenes masking load times get special heat for that.
