Alan Wake 2 Confirmed During The Game Awards, Goes Full Survival-Horror

The long-awaited sequel is officially in the works.

Alan Wake 2 has been officially confirmed. Tonight during The Game Awards, Remedy and Epic Games announced the long-awaited sequel to the fan-favorite, and it comes with a twist.

This is not a big surprise, as a report earlier this year said Remedy was working on Alan Wake 2, with Epic Games funding its development. What's more of a surprise is that the sequel is "the first-ever survival horror game," for Remedy according to creative director Sam Lake. A darker, more unhinged Alan can be seen in the trailer below.

“It's no secret that we have passionately pursued an opportunity to return to Alan Wake’s story for years," said Lake. "All that hard work has brought us here. The stars have aligned. It’s happening now, and we know the community is as passionate as we are about seeing Alan Wake’s next chapter unfold. Alan Wake 2 is our first ever survival horror game, a genre that lets us dive deeper than ever before into building an intense atmosphere and a twisted, layered, psychological story.”

In 2020, Remedy signed a publishing deal with Epic Games for two multiplatform games. One of these is Remedy's "most ambitious" game yet, described as a "AAA" game that was in the pre-production phase as of March 2020. The second is a "new, smaller-scale project" that is set in the same series. Whether or not these projects are Alan Wake 2 and Alan Wake Remastered, or other endeavors, remains unknown.

In May this year, Remedy confirmed that it had six games in production. These include the two mentioned above, the single-player modes for Crossfire X and Crossfire HD, a free-to-play game called Vanguard, and one "new, exciting early-phase project."

The original Alan Wake was released for Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, published by Microsoft. A spin-off, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, was released in 2012. In 2019, Remedy acquired the rights to the series from Microsoft.

In addition to Alan Wake Remastered and the newly revealed sequel, a live-action Alan Wake TV show is in development at Mortal Kombat: Legacy studio Contradiction Films, though we've not heard anything about it in quite some time.

There is literally nothing, realistic or straight fictional, that could have been a better announcement. I was jumping up and down like Tom Cruise on the couch SCREAMING in excitement the moment I heard Matthew Porretta's voice.

Wife: "Is that Keanu Reeves?"
Me: "THAT'S F*CKING ILKA VILLI"
Also me: *screaming like a Beatles fan*

This is the best f*cking christmas gift gaming has ever given me. I'm so happy you guys. OMG I am so happy right now.

😃

This... this was an unexpected surprise. I mean, it shouldn't considering we had the remaster recently but I can't help but be excited from this trailer.

@videogameninja: If anyone was following Remedy closely, the writing has been on the while for quite some time. I have a reddit post from 2019 after playing through Control where I predicted DLC that revolved around the Control-Alan Wake connection, the remaster, and even a straight up 2023 date for Alan Wake 2.

All of it's come down exactly that way.
The only prediction I'm waiting on at this point is the Remedyverse version of Max Payne (Alex Casey) playing a big part in the connected story.

I'm beyond excited about this. Like, I might stroke out.

@skyhighgam3r: I know what you mean. That reveal was so awesome I wouldn't be surprised if people were having heart attacks. 😂

Better get the defibrillator out.
