Alec Baldwin Jumps Ship From DC's Joker Movie Even Faster Than He Signed On

"I'm sure there are 25 guys who can play that part."

35 Comments

And just as quickly as Alec Baldwin signed on to play Thomas Wayne--Batman's father--in the upcoming Joker movie, the Emmy-winning actor has made his exit. According to what Baldwin had to say on Twitter, it seems he doesn't want to be typecast.

"I'm no longer doing that movie," Baldwin told USA Today. "I'm sure there are 25 guys who can play that part." Additionally, he cited scheduling issues as to why he left. However, there are a few other pieces to this that may paint another picture.

Now Playing: Ruby Rose Confirmed As Batwoman In Upcoming DC Arrow-verse Shows - GameSpot Universe News Update

According to a synopsis of Thomas Wayne from The Hollywood Reporter, its sources say Thomas Wayne would be "more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump," and he'd be "a cheesy and tanned businessman."

In 2017, Baldwin won an Emmy for his impersonation of President Trump on Saturday Night Live. And recently, on Twitter, the actor made it apparent that's not the role he wants to play.

"Let me state, for the record, that I have NOT been hired to play a role in Todd Phillip's JOKER as some Donald Trump manque. That is not happening. Not. Happening," Baldwin tweeted early Wednesday morning not even a full day after the announcement he signed on. While fans were unsure if that meant he wasn't doing a Trump impersonation for his role in the movie or he was out altogether remained a mystery until the USA Today interview set things straight: Baldwin is out.

Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Frances Conroy have also signed on to play parts in the upcoming movie, which will star Joaquin Phoenix. The movie will be an origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime, and may come out in 2019. Additionally, there is another Joker movie starring Jared Leto, who played the character in Suicide Squad. The biggest difference between the movies is that Phoenix's film allegedly isn't a part of the DC Cinematic Universe.

He won an Emmy for that God awful impersonation? I always knew the Emmy's were an absolute joke, but that is an absolute new low even for the committee who runs the Emmy's. Seriously should be one of the easiest people ever to satire, yet every time I see and hear his Trump I just cringe all over.

"That's not a role he wants to play."

And it's not an interpretation of the Thomas Wayne character I want to see, so I can't blame him at all.

Leave DC doing TV...first rate TV shows. They destroyed Batman with Affleck. The Joker (and I love Jared Leto) was destroyed by the tats and complete lack of anything resembling The Joker. I get mainstreaming things...but you DONT mainstream the best viallian in all of comics!!! Jesus. The guy doing "The Joker" on Gotham does it extremely well and he is represented well...better than the movies.

That sounds like the complete opposite of what his father is supposed to be. So I guess this movie is fan fiction? With the Joker being the good guy?

@Atzenkiller: Yeah, considering Thomas Wayne is supposed to be a very intelligent and skilled surgeon who uses his wealth to improve the city...

Also if joker has some interaction with Thomas Wayne, does that mean joker is going to be like 40 years old before bruce even becomes batman?

@Atzenkiller: now this movie is probably going to be garbage (only assuming based on DC's track record)... however, it may be an interesting take to see things from Joker's perspective, showing in a new light all of the "good guys" from his POV. Maybe he does see the Waynes to be like the Trumps, or something.

Seems you only have to mention Trump to turn the comment section into a metastasis...

@el_swanno: you win comment of the day in my opinion. It was actually his best movie IMHO. It seems he didn't veer from himself too much in it.

@merritt:

Quite possibly his best. He was only on screen for 5-10 minutes but he gave one of the most memorable and quotable performances ever. And then there Jack Lemmon. Best performance ever.

@el_swanno: I would have to agree. Actually everyone in that movie killed it. Pacino as well. Not that I support the recent events in Kevin Spacey's life, but he was excellent as well. Jack Lemmon, yep. I've watched the movie numerous times. I have it recorded, and I won't delete it from my TiVo.

@merritt:

A film so good it spawned a Simpsons character. Gil is totally meant to be Jack Lemmon/the Machine.

I hope the whole movie falls apart. No self respecting Joker fan wants an origin story.

@CrouchingWeasel: We already have several origin stories for him. I personally wouldn't mind if they fleshed out the one from The Killing Joke.

@mcnichoj: Though isn't the whole point of Joker to basically be an enigma in regards to his origins. Like we aren't suppose to know his origin story at all, that's why there are so many and they are all suppose to be lies.

@DarkCaptain3: The thing is we already have the stories, they would just potentially be bringing one of those to real life. It's not like they couldn't just tell another one or retcon the whole thing in the future like comics already do.

@DarkCaptain3: That's always been my take on it. Part of what makes him so hard to predict and follow is that there is no true or known origin for him. It's what makes him so unpredictable to others, specifically batman. If you can understand how and why, you can understand the threat. If they are an enigma, then you are dealing with an unknown, and that's what makes joker horrifying. At least that's how I've always seen it.

@darthbluntsaber: Knowing that Mr. Freeze straight up kills people in the TAS because his wife doesn't stop him from still killing people. I think you're confusing mystification and motivation. We know for the most part that at some point he was knocked into a vat with a chemical that made his skin pure white. Regardless of who he was before, that doesn't explain why years later he would kill adults, children, even people that work for him or why he would commit acts of rape/sexual abuse. Back to mystery equaling fear, both of the things I mentioned are revealed about Michael Myers in the very first Halloween film but people sill hold it in high regards as one of the scariest movies out there. Being grounded in reality makes something more scary imo, literally just one thing can result in any of us becoming like these characters.

@lionheartssj1:

The character sounds kinda similar to his Glengarry Glen Ross character.

@ebola9717: Technically water isn't wet. Water will get things wet, but pouring water on water doesn't make water any wetter, it just makes more water. But you know that's getting technical and stuff so...yeah anyways have a great day!

@mistervulpes: More like he saw what a sh-show the feedback was on his and DeNiro's casting... Disastrous casting atop another disastrous WB-DC film.
