Alien 5 Director On The Chances Of The Movie Being Made

With Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant hitting theaters in less than four months, it's easy to forget that there is another Alien movie waiting in the wings. Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 was announced in early 2015, but the movie has been "on hold" for more than a year. Blomkamp has now commented on the status of the movie, and it doesn't sound hopeful.

The director was asked on twitter what the chances of fans ever seeing his Alien sequel, and the answer was blunt: "slim."

Sigourney Weaver and Michael Beihn, both of whom are set to reprise their roles from 1986's Aliens, have sounded more hopeful in recent months. Last year Weaver stated that she would be "surprised" if the film didn't happen. "We're doing other things until we can get going on that," she said."[But] I'd be really surprised if we didn't do it, because it's such a great script, and we love working together. So, it's just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it'll be worth the wait."

Blomkamp released several pieces of concept art from the movie last year. However, the director has since started work on another film, while Scott has made it clear that he plans to make more movies in the franchise.

Alien: Covenant was initially announced as a sequel to Scott's 2012 hit Prometheus, but a title change aligned it closer to the Alien series, leading to Fox's decision to put Blomkamp's film on hold.
