All-Digital Xbox One Launches Today, Kicking Off A New Era Of Xbox

The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition has arrived.

Microsoft is expected to announce a next-generation Xbox at E3 next month, but ahead of that, the company today launched the brand-new all-digital Xbox One S. Called the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, the system costs $250 / £200 / AU $350, and it's available anywhere you buy consoles.

Now Playing: New Xbox One: The Pros And Cons Of Disc-Less

The new model is the same form factor and size, but it has no disc drive. It sports a 1 TB hard drive and it comes with three games: Forza Horizon 3, Minecraft, and Sea of Thieves.

The release of the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition is noteworthy because it's the first major home console to offer a disc-free version. Microsoft announced the system in April, at which time it said "consumer appetite for digital content and experiences are stronger today than ever before."

Indeed. Just today, Electronic Arts reported that a whopping 49 percent of all of its full-game sales on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One over the past 12 months were digital. The share of digital sales at other publishers is expected to be rising as well.

The new all-digital Xbox One S is not replacing the standard Xbox One S or the Xbox One X, both of which have disc drives. The new digital version is only an option for people who want it.

The lack of a disc drive means the console doesn't support DVDs or Blu-ray discs, but Microsoft says people can still experience 4K content through Netflix, Amazon, and other destinations. The form factor is the same, and the all-digital Xbox One has the same functionality as the standard Xbox One S. It just cannot play game discs or disc-based media.

Looking ahead, Microsoft is expected to announce one or multiple next-generation Xbox consoles at E3 2019 in June.

Some links to supporting retailers are automatically made into affiliate links, and GameSpot may receive a small share of those sales.

Actually, the Xbox One S All Digital Edition Console has slightly more graphical processing power than the One S. I can see the appeal. Most people, like me, prefer digital games and like Xbox Play Anywhere. Discs, and downloads, are basically the same nowadays. The disk just serves as a key to install the game.

So you save a whole 50 bucks in exchange for the lack of any disc drive and are forced to buy all your games from MS' store. Yeah, that sure seems like a great trade off. Even more so since the normal version even comes with a 4K capable drive. Although those probably barely cost anything today either.

Most folks want a disc drive. I do. I like to be able to play my games I have on disk. I like the blue-ray for movies as well. I know the trend is moving toward streaming/downloads but I enjoy buying used games for titles I want available in my physical library. I like borrowing/lending movies too. I would rather start all over with Play Station than be forced to give up the drive. I have been gaming for about 30 years.

this'll sell like hotcakes.

you all can whine all you want but being priced lower than something else can work wonders for a product, I dont care, i lost hope in gamers and their decision making skills a long time ago since it seems they're allergic to money and wanna toss it away as soon as possible, either on preorders, kickstarters from already rich companies or dlc, when the govt has bills incoming to stop you from spending, to save you from yourself then things are bad, microsoft isnt dumb, the consumer is.

@acenoles: It's only $50 difference. You'd have to be really poor to choose that version over one with a disc drive. Poor enough to not be able to afford a full price game, since that's about what it comes down to. This version is mainly for people who already buy all their games digitally. And those people probably couldn't care less about the price as they're used to paying much more for any recent games on the manufacturer's store.

@sinister432: a $50 difference is roughly the cost of a game. Some may want to apply that $50 to a digital game instead of a disk drive. It's not for you, but if juggernauts like EA are selling half of their games in digital format, it's for somebody.

@kprofitt32: Or those people could buy the normal version and a bunch of retail games for much cheaper than MS is offering them on their store. Games are only decently priced on manufacturers' stores when they're on sale. The rest of the time they're way overpriced compared to any retail store or Amazon. But if you buy a console with no disc drive, then MS' store is your only option. Can't get a more pure monopoly than that.

@kprofitt32: Stop it. Please. Just stop it.

The X1 S All Digital is not $50 cheaper by any means.

Fact: You can buy an Xbox One S for LESS than $250 and NEVER use the disc drive, so you can literally make the S an all digital console by never using discs on it. This is not complicated people. Stop acting like the X1 SAD console is so great, its not.

Fact: Microsoft is using the EXACT same molds for the digital console as disc models, it even has the EJECT button on the NO DISC console behind the plastic case!

Fact: Brand New, Xbox One S are being sold from $209 - 219.

$209 Xbox One S - Walmart Link

$219 Xbox One S - NewEgg Link

Fact: Both of these are CHEAPER than the digital only console.

Dude, seriously, if anyone wants another Xbox as an "all digital" console they will literally buy the regular lower cost model, brand new, and simply never use the disc drive.

Another Fact: The Xbox S All Digital console has the DISC DRIVE PORT INSIDE!!!!

@ps4_and_x1: And what makes you think that the driveless model won't be even cheaper eventually? After all MS is probably charging retail stores less for it as well. It might be more expensive now because it's the newest model that's been just released.

But still, what's $50? You could buy a few retail games for that money, or wait for the games you want to go on sale on the manufacturer's store. Which is the only time when digital games are decently priced.

Interested to see how this does. I think they messed up on the price point. If they weren’t able to lower the price, maybe add on some storage or something.

I’m not a fanboy. I own or have owned nearly every video game console ever made. I have no particular loyalty to XBOX. Having said that, I am a consumer. If, as a consumer, I don’t want a blu ray player, why should I buy one? If I don’t buy used games, why should I need one? The online sales get you to roughly the same price point as GameStop anyway and I don’t have to deal with discs or store clerks trying to sell me crappy DLC, crappier warranties or begging me to do an online customer satisfaction survey so I can earn extra points to spend on Avengers Funko POP dolls or whatnot.

Better yet, what if I already have an Xbox and want an extra one for my bedroom, mancave, office, whatever? It’s an option. It’s not for everybody and I think the article makes that clear.

@pittsburghler: Yeah, I can see how someone who's owned every console ever released would be concerned about saving $50. Of course, if you own a huge mansion with 50 rooms and want to put an Xbox in every one of them, then that can quickly add up. But then if you had that much money you'd laugh at the amount you'd save by buying the driveless version.

@pittsburghler: what I don’t understand is, why get this over the original S? It’s the same price. I agree though, it’s nice to have more options, but I think they could have done better on the price or at least added some features to makes it more worth it.

@Shantmaster_K: It's $50 cheaper that the S. Roughly the cost of a disk drive. Someone, and I'm sure many people with decent internet, would look at the difference in price and think that's the cost of a game. It won't be for everyone, but as ISP's get better or more accessible, the digitization of consoles will continue.

For the sake of consumer choice I hope this epically fails. MS is testing the waters for the next Xbox. I question anyone willing to buy a console at virtually the same price, size, and features as a product that also offers the ability to buy second hand games at a 3rd the value. Not to mention a Digital version makes you beholden to MS for all purchases. Had it been smaller and cheaper I would see some benefits.

@xhawk27: Can you buy your games anywhere else besides the manufacturer's store without a disc drive? I guess you could buy a download code for some games from certain stores, but last I've checked Sony and MS seem to still dictate the prices for that. If they stopped doing that then yeah, sure, digital or physical wouldn't really matter. But who knows if that'll ever happen. They've seen the potential of enforcing prices and that people are buying it anyway, so why should they lower them now or give retailer stores the option of setting prices themselves?

I am not impressed. I mean, yeah - I buy most games digitally as is so this isn't losing much for me but I DO have a few Blur Rays I'd like to have the ability to still use and a version of the Xbox One S with a disc drive can go as low as $209 on Amazon from resellers, so paying $41 more for one without a drive seems... not that great of a deal to me.

Now, if the price of this was dropped to, say, $120 then it makes sense. And I am sure MS could sell it at a loss since this will just up the number of games pass subscribers. That would make sense, to be honest. But at $250 it's just too expensive for what it is.

@wookietim: Yeah, at that price no doubt it would be a huge success. And MS could actually do it since they're making so much more money from their own store than they do from retail sales. The profit margins are way bigger. But people will probably buy this thing just because it costs $50 less. Everyone likes to save some money, even if those same people then go and buy the overpriced games on the manufacturer's store without thinking. If you're only thinking very short term, like saving a few bucks right now, then this sure seems like a good option.
