All Future Forza Games Are Coming to PC and Xbox, Microsoft Confirms

Additionally, Turn 10 confirms Apex Edition will run at 60fps and at a resolution of up to 4K.

261 Comments

This spring's Forza 6 Apex will be the first entry in the racing series to come to PC, but it won't be the last. Today at Microsoft's Build conference in San Francisco, the company aired a new Forza video in which Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt says all future Forza games are coming to Xbox and PC.

No Caption Provided

In the video, Greenawalt says Apex represents the "first step" in the Forza series shifting to Windows 10. It also aims to be a "proof point" of what developers can do using Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform, which allows studios to make games across all Windows 10 devices.

"Moving forward, all of our games are going to be shipping on Windows 10 and Xbox," Greenawalt said. "The Universal Windows Platform is great for the game developers and gamers alike. It's going to become even more powerful as a way of delivering amazing experiences across all of the devices in the Windows ecosystem."

It's also confirmed in the video that Apex is capable of running at 60fps and at a resolution of 4K if your computer can manage it. This is the highest level of fidelity in the history of the Forza franchise.

Apex, a free-to-play version of Forza 6, is due out later this spring, though a release date has not been announced. Another Forza game has been announced and will be properly unveiled at E3 2016. This game's "cover car" is the Lamborghini Centenario, which isn't available in the real world yet.

@jeremiah: Where did I mention price was a deciding factor? There are plenty of reasons to not want to "upgrade", even if it's free.

Now i just need a $1500 pc to let me hit 4k 60fps... That being said I love this new direction. I game mostly on my xb1 but if they keep giving me free pc game with my purchases I'd be a fool to complain.

The only remaining console X1 exclusive left for me is Sunset Overdrive. Looking forward to Scalebound some but there was that apparent leak about it going to PC. I have no reason to buy an XB1 with a PC and a PS4 at this point. If it got original Xbox compatibility then I would definitely get one since I have a ton of original Xbox games to track down, a handful of 360 games to track down and then the handful of games that stay truly X1 exclusive could add up to justify owning one.

@xOmniCloudx: I guess better for MS to sell more people a few games a year than 0 games to those people. The point of the console is to get people to buy games, and I'm not sure how much of a profit is being made on the console sale (as the price is $300 now).

One could say MS lose potential XBL money each year (with the PC bypass route of the console gateway to their exclusives), but that is misleading. Many never plan to buy an XB1 or stay on the fence. Meanwhile, potential software sales cannot be realized.

Eventually all the Xbone 'exclusives' will come out on PC with better resolutions and frame rates. X1 is finished!

@Moonco: X1 isn't finished. This gives PC gamers a reason to buy Xbox One! All of their favorite games will be instantly playable and can be resumed and paused and bounce back and forth between the two. This is a huge benefit for PC/Xbox One gamers.

I must admit, as a huge Forza fan, just thinking of the game in 4K makes me eager to see what it looks like. I see those 4K TV in retail stores on display, the images are breathtakingly crystal clear, I wonder how a game will look like.

It will be nice to see Forza without all the jagged lines. If it actually works as promised on PC. Triple monitor support would be nice too.

@greaseman1985:

There's enough known and potential issues with UWP to know I don't want any part of it.

It is a closed and locked-down platform with the suspected long-term goal of making it like the Apple Store. MS is working to funnel new game and app development into the store, where those games and apps can only be purchase through the store.

Steam Games can be bought anywhere, MS Store games...even 3rd party will be exclusive to the store.

Maybe you should read up on it a bit before deciding MS has your best interest in mind.

I think you're missing the point. If Devs...even 3rd Party Devs want use DX12 to Develop new games, then they have to make them using UWP APIs.

UWP games can only be purchased through the MS Store, so essentially MS is trying to corner the market...does that make sense?

Let's project out and say eventually ALL Devs submit to UWP...do you see a problem with MS having total control over this?

@beantownsean: Not true. Windows 10 is the only windows platform that will ever get DX12 but DX12 is independent of the windows store. There are lots more DX12 titles outside of the store than in it in. The only Windows store titles I can think of is the new Tomb Raider and soon Quantum break. The DX12 in Rise of the Tomb Raider was disappointing on my system and I got better performance going back to DX11. It was Steam version of the game.

@beantownsean: Now, first thing is first, I don't like UWP as is. But it is a huge misinformation saying that if devs want to develop using DX12, they have to use UWP. That is simply not true. And besides that, if MS would like to force that, they would lose the majority of devs to Vulkan, which I'm sure is something that the businessmen/women in MS are aware of :)

I hope MS would fix the issues with UWP (and even then, I don't think I'd use it that much), but please let's not say things that are not the case. One way this might hurt the PC ecosystem though, is if in the future they would force the games to be in .appx packages, instead if win32 binaries (.exe). Now THAT would be incredibly bad. But there is nothing to point to that right now (And that would kinda be playing into the hands of Linux - and most notably SteamOS - for PC gamers; so I would think that it is not that high of a possibility). Right now, they even provide the capability of transforming a Win32 application to an UWP app, using Visual Studio (If you watched the Build conference). This is good. Because if they haven't, you could have argued "The lazy devs would just write their binaries using UWP, because then they won't have to translate that to UWP for XBox One if they wrote it using Win32, and this would decrease the number of games coming using outside platforms like GoG or Steam". But the fact that they are providing this transforming capability helps, because now the devs can create their apps/games using Win32 binaries (as it always has been), and then just transform it to UWP simply, to publish on Windows Store and XBox Market, if they want to.

@arkhenon:

My understanding is that if Devs want to access to the latest APIs, then they need to part of the UWP protocol.

A lot about what MS has planned for UWP and the Store remains to be seen, but personally I don't trust MS with my PC any more than I need to.

I have an XBO, so I'd rather play those games there then purchase Store games today and be left high & dry when MS walks away from PC gaming again tomorrow.

@berserker66666: you do realize that Microsoft owns the entire operating system that IS PC, right? So in turn, Microsoft certainly does own PC. Other than parts manufacturers, they are the only one selling something you MUST OWN to run a PC. Please don't bother getting into the Linux debate either...

@BillJr106: Still nope. Just because M$ owns a software doesn't mean they own the rest of the PC. They know it and we know it. The Linux argument is totally valid. So is SteamOS. If M$ goes too far, people will migrate over to those OS and developers will develop more games for those systems.

@BillJr106: It's still a software though. And if M$ tried to screw it up, there are other OS around. Sure they're not as user friendly as Windows but if enough people migrates, it's gonna have a lot more support and M$ will take a hit. M$ knows it and they're not dumb enough to pull that kind of desperate act. (Or maybe they are judging their acts) We'll see.

Who cares about the PS4?...I primarily game on PC and I like being able to buy my games from Steam, G2A, GOG, Greenman or Amazon.

What MS is offering potentially threatens that.

I have a copy of Gears of War that I cannot get working since its plagued with Games for Windows Live. Why in the world would I get back in bed with MS when I've been burned once before?

You my friend are not speaking from experience.
